lynnej33
I let my 2 chickens roam free range for the first time on Sunday, I have had them for a few months and felt it was time to see how they coped with the big wide world. They had a lovely time all day and came back to there house at dusk, they did sit on top of the run but at least they came back. So yesterday I let them out again and they were still happily pottering around the garden at 7pm, but I went out at 9 and their was no sign of them I searched for well over a hour with no luck. Does anyone have any ideas what may have happened. Would they be roosting anywhere??? Do people steal them??? I live in a tiny hamlet no passing traffic hardly. I am so sad but hoping they may come home today
moochoo
It could just be a case of them finding a bush or tree to roost in if it went dark quicker than they thought. Hopefully foxy loxy hasn't been to visit Any sign of them this morning?
Egluntyne
Hopefully they have roosted in a tree. I would make sure that they are safely in their run before dark as they don't see well after the light drops below a certain level and won't have been able to find their way home. They could have been stolen as you suggest. They could have become someone else's Chicken of Fate or I'm afraid that they might have been taken by a fox. Have a search first thing, and hopefully you will be lucky and find them.
lynnej33
Still no sign of them, I am gutted. Do you think they could still come back when they want to lay???? Or am I just clutching at straws
legend21
Lynne, this is so awful, does anyone near have chickens, If I saw two chickens wandering I would take them because I have chickens, but I would phone the vet and RSPCA to let them know I have them, have you tried the vet in case someone has reported finding them. I really hope you get them back please keep us informed. When they come back invest in an omlet fencing it is great for keeping them in the garden but letting them free range best wishes Jackie
lynnej33
The people opposite have chickens and I have asked them. I am not convinced their dog didnt have them. I was in the house and they were just outside the window so I thought I would have heard something. The worst thing is not knowing, cant even find any evidence. I didnt think I would be so upset but got to keep hoping
Ain't Nobody Here
I'm so sorry to hear this, Lynne . There is still a chance they'll come home so don't give up hope yet . Do keep us posted.
Chook n Boo Mum
Sad news, but don't give up hope just yet, chooks have been known to come home 2 or 3 days later. But if they do come home (or you get newbies), make sure they can't leave the garden again, as you've found out the hard way, the anxiety is not worth their extended freedom Keep us posted , Sha x

lynnej33
Hi All Thank you so much for all your messages. I have some good news. Tikka came home yesterday and laid an egg at about 4.30. I have no idea where she was, I had been looking all afternoon and then she just appeared. Still no sign of Louise . I am not holding out much hope now as I think if she was OK they would have been together, but fingers crossed she is still around somewhere.
