Yesterday I popped into the pet food shop where a friend works & was taken out the back and shown this..................(and yes it really is disgusting :vom: )

and is now known as Blossom

She's quite quite gorgeous, is a Pekin, although I'm not sure what type. She's a beautiful golden peachy colour, and has spent most of her time manically pacing the bounds of her "heath robinson" new home.

She had been given to my friend who is in the process of splitting up from her hubby & can't really take on any more chooks & she knows I want Pekins in the future & as I happened to pop in, offered her to me...if that's not a Chicken of Fate I don't know what is!! I spent the rest of the afternoon chasing round like an idiot making sure I could provide a safe home for her & a separate run to keep her away from the marauders....her "inner sanctum" run is made up from a patchwork of leftovers from the WIR. Any fox stupid enough to take it on would end up shredded on all the sharp edges. Apparently she was the subject of some nasty bullying, though I haven't been able to catch her to inspect her yet, and I'm not sure how old she is either. I've left her to it & kept the monsters shut in for now until I have erected an outer run to make sure everyone - dogs, chooks, children - all keep their distance from her.

Once she'd settled in I'll find her a friend, then maybe introduce another pair so I have a little Pekin pen.......DH will not be a happy egg, I thought he'd flip when he saw Blossom but I obviously worded the explanation carefully & he's ok with the arrangements so far, and I made up the run etc, so he didn't get bothered for help & seemed quite impressed with my efforts

Now we are 14 rather than 13 I am one happy chook mummy...and I don't now need to adopt Tom123 to have some of his luck rub off on me...I'm sure he'll be pleased about that  !!

I'll take some better pics later if the rain keeps off....

I've just googled pekins & she is very probably a buff pekin, I'll try & get a better piccy later....as I type she's sitting in her new temporary home looking very tiny as the last chook who sat in there was Buffie when she first had her Buffling eggs  ...maybe she's old enough to lay an I'll have a darling little bantam egg  .

I'm going to have to buy an bantam egg skelter now............now what colour shall I have.........I'll be in touch soon Freddie!!

Having spent a while sitting in her run with her, I think she may have scaly leg problems, her legs - short as they are!! - are all lumpy bumpy. I've taken a couple of quick snaps which I'll put on here but they aren't very close as she runs away as soon as she thinks I might be coming near :anxious:

Also how many toes does a Pekin have, she looks like she has two claws on her back toe

Thank you all :D

I think she has a bit of spirit tucked into that fluffy little bottom....I let her out into her run, Buffie & the Bufflings into theirs and the others into the rest of the garden as I was leaving to take DD swimming at about 5.45. I returned about 7.45 & was greeted at the gate by DH who said "did you get my message about Broccoli getting out?" Er no, I'd forgotten to pick my mobile up so was blissfully unaware

When the message eventually turned up on my phone he'd left a slightly concerned shall we say message along the lines of "parsnip's out, ring me".....he's never been good with names

Goodness know how she'd got out but between DH & DS they managed to get her back behind her multiple layers of fencing...methinks some wing clipping will be occurring once I catch the little tinker! He said she wandered around like she owned the place, took a stroll up to meet the babies, who of course are not much smaller than her and was put in her place by Bluebell. Having heard a couple of chook squabbles about 1/2 an hour earlier than when he actually noticed her on the outside of her run, she could have been out for quite some time :anxious: , perhaps I'll put some netting across the top of her run tomorrow
