Goodness me Janty - you poor thing having to go through all this. I have only just caught up with the thread but have to agree with everyone else who thinks that this guy is a complete crook who is trying it on big time.

It's just been pointed out to me that friends in police can't do personal checks by someone who didn't want my friend getting into trouble. My friend is reporting the matter to their station and the checks will be done totally above board. I wanted to reassure you all.

 

Thanks for all your help over the past few days...it has been really stressful. Anybody who has met Mr. Janty will know that he is totally nice and straight as a die. He has felt rotten and ill over this.

He bought a car for LESS THAN £500 - it's seriously unlikely to be perfect - it was drivable and presumably had an MOT - really not a lot more you can expect for that money. Jeez you even mentioned earlier it had road tax - that has to be worth what a fifth of the value of the car??

 

He clearly realised you were a nice, honest person and decided to try it on.

Thank goodness that appears to be the end of your traumatic weekend. Why is life so complicated . I hope it doesn't wreck your eBay feedback. I have seen sellers leave positive feedback because they have to but have actually written honest negative feedback in the space where you get to write something. I would contact eBay to see if they can block any negative feedback from them.

Only just been back on the forum and caught up with this. How awful for you both to be going through this. There are many, many dishonest creeps (not my preferred choice of name) out there and we've all come across them in one form or another. You are 100% correct in your handling of the whole sorry affair and you must now try to put it firmly behind you and not waste your energies on the prat. The sad thing is, he'll be targetting his next victim and they may fall foul of his intimidation tactics.

Glad he seems to have backed off now, definitely get the documents in the post though - we sold a car a couple of years ago and the guy wanted to take the docs to fill in himself, hubby refused and posted them straight away then shortly afterwards we got a summons for a speeding offence in the early hours a couple of days after we sold it. Luckily the signed and dated docs meant they knew we were no longer the owners but the new owner hadn't sent in their bits so the police had no contact details.

 

We sold our last car through the ebay motoring classifieds section which works more traditionally so no one bids, you put an asking price and potential buyers view the car before committing to buy. That car sold to a couple who drove 5 hours after work to our house, viewed the car in the dark with a torch then took it home with them that night.

Second hand car bought privately as seen and test driven.

 

It is very much a case of buyer beware. Trading Standards don't come in to it as far as I can see you are not a car trader, but a private seller. If he is such an expert on slipping clutches he would have spotted it during the test drive.
