ubereglu
Well...as most of you know I've been looking for a job since about mid June, (when I finished GCSEs) and I'm now still searching and have no idea what I can do now. I've literally applied to EVERY job which has been advertised that I could actually do and would fit around college, (probably about 40 now...), have dropped off CVs to a couple of places and am on records of quite a few stores, even if they don't currently have any jobs or I've applied before. I keep looking in shop windows, the local papers and various websites, like REED, jobcentreplus, In retail and various other places. Now I've run out of ideas... PurpleTree
It's sounds like you're having a really hard time. I got my first job in Sainsbury's when I was 17, on the checkouts. I used to do Tuesday and Saturday evenings 5:30pm-10:30pm, quite enjoyed it although hard work. Have you tried all your local supermarkets? Gem_Seb
I used to waitress on parties and weddings! i loved it! it was long hours but a great social job and when your 18 you can go on to train for the bar so its a long lasting job if you want to carry on in education! i started when i was 15 and finished last year as im finally in a position where i dont need to work 2 jobs to get by now!! Cinnamon
My daughter is in the same situation. She just wants to earn some extra money doing something, but no luck yet. Most places don't even bother getting back to her - I have lost count of the number of application forms she has filled in,handed in & heard not a word back. Some places have interviewed her,but not bothered to tell her if she has got the job or not (hands up,Waitrose! ), which is almost unbelievably rude,in my opinion. She is a little despondant,as you can imagine, but is now applying for Christmas run-up staff. This is difficult too,as most places are looking for someone to work during the week, & college doesn't end until December 18th. craftyhunnypie
There's a job going at my place for a chicken sitter - but you are both too far away. I used to work in a cake shop making sugar flowers, animals etc for all ocasion cakes. I also worked in a chemist on the perfum counter. Then I worked at Boots on the music / photography counter. I also signed up with agencies in the school / college holidays. One job was pushing the meat down with my thumb..in pork pies! Redwing
I took on a 16 year old via an organisation called Connexions who were amazingly helpful, I am very pleased with my recruit too I think Connexions are a national organisation
jess
I know how hard it is to look for jobs, the rejection is so hard to take. Have you got any volunteering experience on your CV? It is very unlikely you will get hired with no experience (assuming you have none) so I would do that, charity shops etc, obviously not sure where you live and how populated it is, but thats what I would do first. You do have my sympathy looking for a job is like this at times I hope you find one soon!
kitbag
I think Connexions are a national organisation I think that Connexions are in most school. In my school, they set up meetings with sixth formers! I just got a job at the end of my GCSEs (In June too!) and i was very very lucky! Apperently they had about 500 people go for the 6 jobs available!
Valkyrie
Don't worry too much. Some jobs will soon be available because the University students will be going back, leaving openings. We found this happened for both DS and DD. At the moment DD is working voluntarily for the Hospice shop in the village - most other teens want to get paid, so they don't try those. It can help so much on your CV. And as mentioned before Connexions is very good and they have lists of local firms wanting staff.
Cate in NZ
I'd second the voluntary work suggestions. I know that you don't actually get paid, but depending on the organisation there might be perks , it's all good work experience for your cv, and it could ultimately make the difference between you and another candidate when it comes to a paid job. When we first arrived over here both of my children wanted to work...in fairness they also needed to network and meet people. So Immy volunteered for Riding for the Disabled which had a centre just a short journey up the road from where we were living. She helped with feeding the horses, mucking out, and during the school holidays was able to help exercising the horses. She got free rides and a great reference when she applied for a paid job . According to her boss it was that reference and experience that made her stand out from all the other 15 year olds submitting CVs at the same time
WarrensWorld
If you live near a golf club, you could try caddying. That's what I did in the holidays, made a good few bob at it too. Long time ago though........
rosie
Pubs and nursing homes. Lots seem to be willing to take on part time youngsters, especially if you turn up in person with a short but nicely presented CV. Good luck
Valkyrie
I know you said you haven't had much luck with the Connexions in your area - we must be lucky, the guy rang today to find out how DS is getting on. He's in the US for a week I said (actually I thought I was talking to one of his friends). So the fellow is going to forward all the new details onto DS's e-mail. There are actually 3 in our area. One in the village, one in Basingstoke and one nearby in Fleet, so they are always cross referencing so that the youngsters have more choice. Oh, discount for the Hospice shop? Yes. Although with the amount of items that DD has brought home doesn't really mount up to much - every time she goes, she brings something back with her! I think she pretty much has paid for the shop! ubereglu
Thanks for your feedback, I know that volunteering is a good idea, but as I've just started college I'd rather not do unpaid work and focus on studiers instead, until I manage to find paid work. Hadn't in an application form to Clintons yesterday, as they need a weekend person to work 4 hours each day, (Sat and Sun). Hopefully Tesco will have some jobs going soon too. I know Sainsbury's do, but the closest one is Sherborne and about 5 miles away.
Clur
Problem is that with the high rates of redundancy etc, older people are going for the supermarket-type jibs traditionally the preserve of students. Will get better, but not overnight
Cinnamon
Hadn't in an application form to Clintons yesterday, as they need a weekend person to work 4 hours each day, (Sat and Sun). Good luck! Devon handed one in to Clinton last week, & they were one of the few places polite enough to send back a letter saying that the position had been filled. A chickychickychick-ENN!! I know Sainsbury's do, but the closest one is Sherborne and about 5 miles away. A four hour shift at a charity shop will give you valuable retail experience, not cut into your study time, and give you the warm fuzzy glow of knowing you're doing good for a charity/the community. Or if you make things which are pretty and crafty, etsy is booming. Knitting, sewing, all that kind of thing. Why not set up an etsy shop? Knitting, sewing, all that kind of thing. Why not set up an etsy shop? I could set up an etsy shop, but I'm under 18, so would have to get someone to on my behalf-will probably ask Vikki to. Mountainboarddude, I know about Waitrose, but it's just too far to get to on a regular basis as I don't drive, so I'd have to get my Mum/Dad to take me. Mum has offered to take me to Sherborne if Sainsbury's have any jobs-but they only have Evening roles, which mostly finish at Midnight, so that's not a possibility at the minute. There's another Waitrose in Crewkerne which has opened recently too, it's closer, but still a bit too far for me... I had an interview at Clintons today, but even if I do get offered the job I'm likely to turn it down as it will mean I have NO free days at all, as even though it's a 8 hour contract, (manageable), you HAVE to do both days of the weekend, EVERY WEEK, so it's not something I'd want to commit to, if it was just one day it would have been ok. Thanks for your feedback though.
