whoopsie
How often should you let the girls have mealworms? My girls have polished off a tub over two days, the result of which is they now sit on my lap to be petted! Should I ration this treat or is it ok? eggregiousness
Well I think it was worth it then! Mealworms are very light so I'm sure they could eat a fair number without much trouble but I am meaner than you (and mealworms are really expensive) and ration them to a couple of teaspoonfulls each per day. whoopsie
Thankyou! I was thinking oof buying a tub a month since, as you say, they are expensive. They had a load of garden worms that my neighbour dug up yesterday too so they are very well fed at the moment!
Laura & CTB
Guess it depends how big the tub is - I mean I buy the 3 litre size and that would be a LOT of mealworms
Redwing
I'm very tight fisted with the mealworms - I have 36 chooks and a £4 bag lasts a couple of months
Chucky Mama
My 'chicken sitter' got through a 3kg tub during the week that I was away recently. The girls where extremely happy but it would have lasted me a few months but just because I am stingy and like to sometimes get out of the back door to go to the shed without being mugged by 4 chickens

Old Speckled Hen
My 4 get two handfuls to go to bed with. I buy them by the 2Kg sack so that lasts me quite a while.
Space Chick
Mealworms are also high in protein so can give them runny poos. I have noticed this with mine, as I have increased the mealworm rations as I am needing to give the ex batts more protein to help with their feathering, and I can't not give the others any too
coco
I went through a small bag in a month. Once a month the girls get a tub of live ones which they love and it gives them something to do scratching round in the grass for them. Old Speckled Hen
http://www.wildbirdfood.uk.com/acatalog/Live_Bird_Food.html £21.75 for 2 Kg The link takes you to live mealworms but there is a dried option at the bottom of the page. I haven't found anywhere cheaper.
whoopsie
I just had a small tub of live worms from Pets At Home - they went nuts!!!! Thanks for the tip about the runny poos - I noticed this and wondered what caused it. Good to know it's nothing to worry about

smokiechicken1969
for some reason we couldnt have put the lid back down on the last big tub we had. i've never seen anything like it, it was like a shark frenzy! the ducks were shoveling mouthfuls at a time, the chickens went wild boc bocing and screaming with delight. i was in the middle of them all trying to scoop up what was left and put them back in the tub. as i was scooping there were chickens and ducks bouncing up and down all around me like they were on bits of elastic. i think i salvaged three worms in total now the tub stays in the utility room my partner says im the same with a bag of maltesers! Lewis
my partner says im the same with a bag of maltesers! I bought a tub from a local reptil shop, gave a few to the chickens and put them away, then mom found them in the house, didn't like them and gave them all to the chickens! Barbara now demands to get on my lap in the garden now - today she was pecking at my trouser legs to get me to sit down! Goodness knows how she'll be when I get more mealworms.
