Cinnamon
I am a HUGE disaster movies fan...have been ever since my childhood when I started watching The Towering Inferno & The Poseidon Adventure. There are so many great ones: Twister, The Day After Tomorrow, Titanic, Deep Impact, Armageddon & Independence day to name but a few. The new movie '2012' comes out next month & I cannot wait. Its by Roland Emmerich who did 'The day After Tomorrow', so we will be in for some spectacular effects, & it stars one of most favourite actors,John Cusack. Are there any other disaster movie fans out there?????
WarrensWorld
Not us there are enough disasters in real life without seeing them in IMAX.........
EmmaJC
Not especially, but I have to admit I'm very excited about The Road. It's out next year and is based on the book by Cormac McCarthy (spelling?). It's about a man and his son travelling across America after an apocalypse as they avoid roving bands of cannibals and flesh farmers - an utterly amazing book and very worthy of the many awards it has won. We too saw the 2012 trailer on the tv this week and though that looks good. I love John Cusack too The only genre I dislike is horror or too tense thrillers. Cinnamon
Not us there are enough disasters in real life without seeing them in IMAX......... I should add that with the exception of Titanic,I only watch fantasy disaster movies,& could never like anything about 9/11 for example. I prefer my movies with a healthy dose of wit, cynicism, optimism & imagination
Seagazer
I like some disaster movies ie Independence Day, Day after Tomorrow but they do fill me with a certain feeling of dread that I just don't like. I've watched Independence Day lots of times now so its not so bad. I'm no good with horror movies either actually I must just be a wimp. Deep Impact really made me sad see I am a wimp. I love John Cusack though so may watch it. p.s. don't even start me on Titanic, that had me blubbing for days.
The Dogmother
I actually sat down and watched a film the other day - Cloverfield.... it was very good and I didn't fidget once.
Cinnamon
I love John Cusack though so may watch it. I love him too & enjoy all of his movies. He is so quirky & funny....even in something like Con Air he manages to pull that face & bring a bit of cynical humor to the role
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
I like the visual effects of disaster films, but find the plots ropey and want half the characters to die (if I'm grumpy) as they're sometimes a bit rubbish. I see this particular film has got some particularly stupid people particularly frightened - as well as winding up Nasa... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/film/film-news/6356140/Nasa-world-will-not-end-in-2012.html Unbelievable how dumb sum folks is innit? ubereglu
I'm not really a disaster movie fan, but having a disaster film called '2012' just sounds like a satirists dream with the Olympics and all!

Redwing
I absolutely loved 'At Your Door' that was a great movie, not quite a disaster one really I suppose but the same tense moments
Valkyrie
I have watched Independence Day so many times that I almost know the script - if my memory wasn't as bad as it is I could be word perfect! I think it may have something to do with the fat lady singing. But I do like Will Smith. Fancy a scaremongering 2012! Crackers. Still not seen the Titanic - sharing a birthday with a disaster is quite enough for me. But yes I do like disaster movies and anything with lots of action. It's a pity we have been spoilt with some fantastic CGI's - when something slightly inferior comes up we tend to pull it apart somewhat. Cinnamon
Still not seen the Titanic - sharing a birthday with a disaster is quite enough for me. My hubby also has this birthday...........not the year though!!!

Happy chickens!
Started to watch the original Poseidon Adventure repeated for the zillionth time at the weekend - loved it when a child, but mmm, hope I've aged better!!!! Do love these films those in general, but Cloverfield, what was that about?! Worst film I've seen in ages!
henriette
What is it about disaster movies? I love them, but I hate disasters in real life. Maybe watching them makes us wonder how we would cope in similar situations?
BarbaraJ
So has anyone seen 2012 yet? we tried Friday but it was sold out so went Sat instead and cinema was full to brim (unusual in last year). It was brilliant the special effects kept you on the edge on your seat . The story wasn't bad for a disaster film too. I'm off to see it again Thursday with my friend as we all have cinema cards I go for the special effects and don't get too excited for the story line lol Edited November 18, 2009 by Guest
Valkyrie
My son went to see it with a new (female) friend. He thought the special effects were so good that he didn't notice the poor storyline. New friend was bored. I think I'll go with what he says - we like the same sort of movies. Hoping to all go and see this.
Cinnamon
Hoping to go next week as I am stupidly busy this week I am really looking forward to it
Willow
I like disaster movies - As a child (pre secondary school) I only remember seeing 2 movies at the cinema - Sleeping Beauty and The Poseidon Adventure (unusally for the early 70's this was a friends birthday treat to take a group of friends). I must have seen others but I don't remember them Given my job liking disaster movies feels a bit like a guilty 'reading the tabloids' sort of pleasure. chickencam
I love Independence day and The Day After Tomorrow, but have heard mixed things about 2012. OH wants to see it, so I'm sure we will when the crowds have died down a bit.
