The Dogmother
Exactly! But I suppose at least they're doing something Dog fighting was prevalent where I used to live in south east London - the dogs were mostly owned by 'yardies', and regular fights used to take place in the bushes on the common at the top of our road. Egluntyne
Revnev...I think you'd get on well with Him Indoors.... He used to drive a Fiat 126! (as he is over 6 foot he looked like an elephant in a baked bean tin)..... Has upgraded to a Panda simply because they no longer make 126's. He insists that same formula applies in reverse

Guest
Phil, I used this example to illustrate just how tolerant and well behaved some dogs can be if they are well trained and have responsible owners. I would never have let Rosie do it if I had thought that she would be harmed in any way, and she was never at any time left alone with Belle (who idolised her). I am sure that most people would realise that I wasn't recommending that they let their babies do this. It wasn't meant as a criticism of you, Clare - that's not my place - or anyone else's. I probably didn't explain what I meant well enough. You said you agreed with the posts above - and then told us about Rosie using Belle the lurcher as a walking aid... I read the general tenor of the previous posts as saying that you never get to the points where you can totally trust a dog with that kind of intimate contact with a very small child - because any dog - however well trained or however friendly/docile they have been in the past - is capable of snapping in an instant. With a child that close - it wouldn't matter if you were in the room or not, the damage would be done... How many times have we heard the phrase - "I can't understand it - he was such a lovely dog - he wouldn't hurt a fly" after one of these incidents? In telling the story, it sounded more like you were disagreeing with the previous posts (to me anyway) and suggesting that there is a time when you can trust a big dog with that kind of contact (hanging onto its fur) with a very small child... My family has always had dogs - usually border collies (they can be grumpy "Ooops, word censored!"s!) - and I think I would be very uncomfortable about any of my children hanging onto the dog as they learned to walk - however docile and friendly the dogs are - and we've had some docile ones and some grumpy ones.. for another thing, I'd worry that my children might assume it was OK to do that with any dog... still - as I said - no harm done, so, no problem.. Mel (& Paul)
Ok 1. Never believe everything the press says - af first they were reporting that the dog was well trained and the little girl asleep then that the dog was viscious and the uncle a drug dealer. 2. Never trust a dog - whether they are a "soft" labrador, or a "hard" pit bull - I have dealt with too many dog bite claims to know that the dogs are unpredictable - some of them because of their breeding but more often than not because of their owners - please dont "blame" the dog - they arent the ones to be blamed Ok off to lie down with a cool towel over my forehead
