4m x 3m Omlet pen, cube, new auto door still boxed and coop light

We've lost Morag - no idea why.

 

We've had her for a couple of months, got four hens at POL from Merrydale Farm in Leicester after our first beloved Omlet girls were taken by Mr Fox. Our ranger started laying within a couple of weeks and gives us an egg every day, our Sweetie laid once then had to be PTS after a prolapse the next day. Our Sussex is the Peter Pan of hens and refuses to grow up! Her wattle and comb haven't grown at all since we got her and we are starting to think she'll never lay! Then there's Morag, our Blue. She hadn't laid yet but her wattle and comb have been getting bigger so we've been quite hopeful for the first egg from her soon. She was a bit hunched up yesterday but still scratching and eating, plus we've been here before with softies from previous hens so I wasn't too worried.

OH went to shut the run door last night - he always gives the girls a stroke through the eggport door and last night commented that Morag was in the nesting box - she NEVER sleeps in the nesting box so again, we had our fingers crossed for an egg.

I've come downstairs this morning, Agnes and Mittens are in the run - no Morag. So, I go to the egg port, lift it off gingerly to find one dead Morag in the nesting box.

OH will be disposing of the body as soon as he's had a cuppa, he'll check for signs of a prolapse but other than that, I've no idea why a young, healthy hen would just die like that.

 

I'm obviously gutted to lose yet another hen but why is this happening to us?! I'm getting a bit fed up with them dying on me

 

Does anyone think the farm we got them from got a dodgy batch? Could we be doing something wrong?

Sorry to hear of your loss Unfortunately some of them do just seem to keel over with absolutely no warning. I had one last week - I have several that I think may be the next to go, but this was one of the healthiest girls. Just found her on her back in the run, feet in the air. No signs of illness or injury whatsoever. If you are looking after them properly then you have nothing to feel bad about - just one of those things I'm afraid. xx

Chickens go through some very stressful times in life and one of the first difficulties they face is the trauma of coming into lay. Sadly it does sometimes result in them just keeling over. Sorry to hear about your lady.

So sorry to hear that. It does happen sometimes, though. I had one that died of a prolapse. She was fine in the morning, sitting in the nesting box that afternoon and dead in the nesting box that night. Very, very sudden. I'm sure it won't keep happening.

OH disposed of Morag earlier, he checked every inch of her and found nothing untoward at all. We have come to the conclusion that she was eggbound, something internally went pop and that's what finished her off. Poor thing

 

Well looking on the bright side.......we can get two new ones to get back up to a flock of four!!
