Hemcore

Recommended Posts

I have just put a layer of hemcore in my run. It says on the packet to water it, but I haven't. Does anyone know if I need to? Also, can I put it in the nesting box instead of straw as my chooks think it is hilareous to empty their nest as as soon as I have filled it!

Don't know about watering it, but I suspect that is the advice if it is going to become the base of your stable for horses only.

I put Aubiose (same stuff) in the nest box as my three are still on grass: They love it, and unlike the straw that I used to have in there, it stays put and the eggs are cleaner! 8)

Oh, and in the droppings tray of course: Magical stuff!

I understand that it composts far better than bark or wood chip.

Hemcore/Aubiose is very dry, so isn't as soggy in the nest as straw, which tends to look dry on the top, but be damp underneath.

Like the others, I use it in the run (unwatered), the pooo tray and the nest. When I empty the run out every few months, I just dump it straight on the garden and it disappears into the soil.

Here's a quote from the Aubiose site:

Aubiose is made from young plants, and will break down rapidly to form a very valuable compost.

I've been using hemcore in the run and poo tray but have been using shredded paper in the nest box. It's a bit of a pain because my naughty girls like to drag it out into the run making the run look untidy. Hadn't thought about using hemcore in the nest box too so will give this a try. Yet again more top tips from the forum :)
