Nervous on the ice

Recommended Posts

Right, well, as the heading says, I am very nervous about walking on the ice and slippery surfaces. So much so, my hubby has to take the kids to school in the mornings if its icy. I've always been a bit nervous, but its got worse since I broke my ankle 4 years ago (which incidently wasn't on ice but on a damp slope in the back garden in the middle of summer!) I am on the search for suitable footwear so I feel more confident about walking on the ice.

I bought myself some of these for Christmas http://www.presentsformen.co.uk/product-PFM-Ice-Grippers-6073/ but I still didn't feel really safe.

So, can anyone recommend anything? Are Timberland boots any good as my current DM's tread has worn away and will need to be replaced soon and this is what I am thinking of replacing them with.

Cheers me dears :D

I have been fine so far this year in my Timberland boots- especially in the ice and snow. They are not ankle boots but knee- length ones. I actually felt more confident in them than in my fancy North Face walking boots. Although to be fair the iced snow is now like glass around our way and so probably treacherous in most footwear.

Gosh that's interesting Egluntyne - if I buy a pair, it's almost guaranteed never to snow again, or at least not until I've put them away in a safe place and forgotten where it is!

Seriously, they look practical, the last ten days or so have been a nightmare as the pavements where I live were like glass. I fell over once, luckily not injuring myself badly although I have a whopping great bruise. I might get some of these, thanks for the tip.

Those look good Egluntyne, might have to invest in some. They look just like the snow chains we used when driving through the Alps.

I have been wearing my usual Cotton Traders snow boots, which are fur lined - they keep me toasty and are also very grippy in the ice and snow. We're on a hill, and the road doesn't get gritted (usually, although it did this year) and ends up like sheet ice.
