Yogurt pot and cooked peas. Success...

Recommended Posts

Since my hens are confined to their run more at the moment, I have been reading with interest posts on creating homemade peck blocks etc.

Faced with a leftover bowl of cooked peas this morning (does anyone else have kids' friends come for tea who don't eat anything :wall: ) and writer's block on the work I'm supposed to be getting on with  , I decided to have a go at creating a simple Blue-Peter-esque peck block for my girls.

I retrieved an empty yogurt pot from the recycling bin, cut a small square shaped hole in the base (just large enough for a pea to fall through), poked a couple of holes through 2 sides at the top, threaded string through and filled the amazing invention  with the peas. I then tied it to the roof of the run so that it was swinging just within peck distance.

Initially, the girls were completely bemused but after I prodded it a few times to release some peas they quickly got the idea  and were leaping and pecking with gusto. :D There is the added excitement of the unpredictability of the landing of the pea as it rolls across the floor of the run

Just tried this with my girls and sweetcorn!

Great slow release treats.

However i discovered that chooks are not that daft. Day 2 of using it and they know exactly what it is even so much that the sat watching me holding it when they should have been eating their regular food!
