OMG - this reminds me of when I was little! I am the youngest of three and my parents were pretty strict (ex R.A.F), my mum was always on a diet and lived on slimming biccys. We were never allowed to have anything without asking,and one day my mum noticed that her biccys had gone. We all said it wasn't us, so one by one we were put over our dads knee and got slapped! We were then sent upstairs to think about it and my big sis and bro said that I should own up as I was the youngest and then dad wouldn't smack us anymore.So, we went back downstairs and I owned up!I then got another slap and was sent to bed! It turned out that it was our baby sitter that had eaten them!!! :evil::evil::evil:

It may be possible to do something about that, depending on the table's finish and how deep the carving has gone. Got any pics?

We thought of that, but its several mm deep, and underlined for good measure!! We just keep the computer keyboard over the top of it now!!

OK, well I'll just point out a few things then.

  • If it's that deep, the finish probably isn't the seriously rock-hard kind of stuff used for protecting wood from knocks. That's good in this case, because it'll be easier to take back to bare wood.
  • If, after revealing the bare wood, you soak the patch for a while with water (leaving a bunched up wet flannel over it overnight would do fine) , it'll swell the grain and tend to close up the damage. Once it dries again, the wood can be sanded down again and you can reassess the damage. That's a trick often used for closing up holes in wood once panel pins have been driven in, so that might give you an idea of how well it can work.
  • There is a bewildering range of coloured filler waxes, one of which will give an excellent colour match. After closing up the damage using the previous point, you might find some of that in what's left of the damage blends in well enough to make it almost invisible.
  • If none of that works, you still have the option of getting a local cabinet maker or restorer to let in a bit of new wood. Anyone worth their salt should be able to get a good enough match to produce an excellent job.

Could you bake some biccies with some kind of food dye in that will stain the culprit's mouth and fingers?

That reminds me of a classroom incident many years ago when someone stole the dentist's disclosing tablets thinking they were sweets!!!!!! It wasn't difficult to see who had been the culprit even though they denied it. The funniest part was trying to keep a straight face!!! :clap:

This thread is brilliant :lol: .

It reminded me of when I was at boarding school and aged about 8. I stood on my bed and wrote my name and the date in the corner of the wall right up at the ceiling.

Trouble was, I used a thick purple felt tip pen and you could see it from the other side of the room :doh::oops::lol: .

Can't remember the punishment :think::lol: .
