Valkyrie
The RIR is gorgeous - whether boy or girl. Not seen one of those chiccies before - what a colour. Of course the other babes are just so cute. Well done mum.

TAJ
Buff Rock is cute, It is cute actually - I need to take a photo of little rock and rocky rhode together - they are the little & large of the operation. The RIR is OH & DD favourite, mine is the silkie with those fluffy legs - even fluff on its feet down to its toes and that hair do. I also have a soft spot for old band leg (who is walking a bit better now). The frizzle has to be in the ugly chick nominations - I will try and take a better photo later. TAJ
aww its fat and ginger Naw its lovely, a really nice colour and very cute Are you calling my little chick names? He isn't very happy with you - look: As you know I have only ever hatched meat birds & grown meat birds from day old in the past - so to me he is normal size, it is just the rest that are tiny! This next photo isn't great photo, but you get the idea - the little Plymouth Rock above and the silkie were in eggs that the metal cage bit of the brooder fell on the day before they were set - on Redwings advice they were repaired with sticky tape - the silkie egg was a bit more than just a hairline crack and had blue nail varnish on as well to ensure it was sealed - these are therefore miricale chicks - I would have thrown the eggs away but OH suggested super glue and then Redwing advised the nail varnish/tape and we have two lovely chicks. http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/TAJchicks/IMG_2611.jpg Tracy Edited March 13, 2010 by Guest

TAJ
Thats amazing that the nail varnish egg hatched considering it was obviously badly damaged, well done I think the shell looks worse in the photo as it is so close up, it was about 1cm long, the membrane obviously wasn't damaged, but the nail varnish obviously stopped air getting in and drying the membrane whilst in the inccy - so thanks it was a great tip - let's hope I do not have to use it again. TAJ
A sad day at 9 days old the RIR has died I have never lost a chick before - a big fat table chicken at 8 weeks yes, but never a chick in 4 batches (hatched & day olds). It was fine this morning at 11 am when I cleaned them all out, but then there was a lot of chirping around 12.30 and it looked rather floppy - when I got it out it just sat in my hand and felt quite cold. I gave it the smallest amount of nutri drops and held it in my hands to warm it up. A couple of times it came round and chirped, but it died peacfully in my hands about 20 mins later. No signs of anything wrong with it and a big healthy chick from day one - so now I am hoping it is not something the others may have caught something from Tracy

TAJ
They were 2 weeks old yesterday - they still look very small to me, but comparing to the day old photos they have grown - just not as fast as I am use to with meat birds! Sorry about the links - Explorer crashes if I try to re-size in photobucket. In order - the black frizzle - just starting to get frizzled wings http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/TAJchicks/IMG_2621.jpg My silkie - will it end up black or grey? http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/TAJchicks/IMG_2622.jpg Mr Cream Legbar - full wings and tail and most developed of them all http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/TAJchicks/IMG_2623.jpg Little ickle pickle the bantam Plymouth Rock - lots of character and getting well feathered http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/TAJchicks/IMG_2624.jpg These three are the SL Dottes - so I need Redwing to sex them from their faces (might need a clearer shot though) they have been the slowest to develop - wings just coming through now. http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/TAJchicks/IMG_2626.jpg http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/TAJchicks/IMG_2627.jpg http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/TAJchicks/IMG_2630.jpg Tracy
Redwing
lovely pics I cant tell what sex the dottes are next, best guess would be that the last one is a male though sorry
TAJ
Thanks Redwing I need to take some better face photos of the Dottes - the trouble is I am home alone and they are not good at standing stil, so I am trying to hold chick and camera at the same time - I will try again when I have an assistant on hand. I think the dottes do not look much different - so could all be the same sex? They are slow developing, so perhaps by next weeks the heads will be more defined.
