Space Chick
I observed some rather interesting chicken behaviour today. Rose had been in laying, and had laid me her usual splendid white egg About 15mins later Donna headed for the cube, as she reached the door, she turned looked at Rose and bokked a few times. Rose bokked back, then followed her into the cube. This intrigued me, so I went and had a peep in the nesting box, there were Donna and Rose squeezed into the corner together quietly chattering away to each other, it was like they were whispering. After half and hour, Rose came out first, and Donna came out a minute or two later and did an understated egg announcement. There was indeed a Donna egg in the nestbox. However, what I want to know, is what were they whispering about, and why did Donna call Rose in with her in the first place. They are plotting something

docsquid
That is interesting, because mine were behaving similarly today. When I opened the cube door, Megan had laid her egg already. As we were eating breakfast, Gwennie disappeared in to lay hers, then came out again. Then, while we were still eating breakfast, Blodwyn went in, with much clucking, bustle waggling and general fuss, as is her custom. The other two kept going into the cube with her, taking turns to be in the nest box with her, then coming out and bokking a bit. They kept up a relay like this, going into the nest box with Blodwyn. Blodwyn emerged once, and then went back in, with her accompanying friends again taking turns to be with her. Eventually, Blodwyn came out, there was much shrieking and bok-squawking, and they all burst out of the run when I opened the door. I wondered what they were doing - were they being nosey, or was Blodwyn having trouble with her egg, or were they indeed plotting something? Obviousyl I need to be more careful of these little chooky-chats!

beulah59
I had cleaned out the ark this morning and was chatting to the girls when Yolande made it clear she wanted to be let out of the run ... she whined and nagged and begged (you can tell, can't you?) ... so I opened the gate to the run and let her out. Yolande is an ex-batt and has egg troubles ... her eggs are often soft or thin shelled and she'll have a couple of weeks off before laying a wrinkled egg for two or three days before stopping again. We haven't had an egg from her for some days, although I thought one was brewing yesterday ... She went straight across to the small run we used to settle the new hens and into the covered cat carrier we gave them as a nest box, and ten minutes later had laid an egg! Now why on earth did she want so badly to go and lay it there?!
Space Chick
Well interesting alternative take from my DH Phil reckons that they were gossiping about what we are plotting. A new Blue Eglu has appeared in the garden, we are talking about hen parties. They are wondering what we have planned

henriette
Well interesting alternative take from my DH Phil reckons that they were gossiping about what we are plotting. quote] Yup, I reckon that's what it is. Ours do it all the time. They don't trust us for one second The only thing is, I think a lot of counter-plotting goes on
docsquid
It's interesting - after my report yesterday, I found that Blodwyn hadn't laid an egg, despite multiple comings and goings to the nest box. Today she started doing the same, again with her relay of attendants, and this time she laid a whoppa. Obviously she was having a bit of difficulty getting that big egg out, and the others were showing female solidarity with her, perhaps giving her a little bit of encouragement and the like. She announced her egg so loud that it could be heard over the aerobics music I had playing at the time All three chooks now look very perky, as if they have all been responsible for production of Blodwyn's Egg. Or maybe, of course, yesterday they were plotting something and I'll find out what it was later today sometime!
Valkyrie
Apache keeps disappearing for ages - she better hadn't be broody - she laid a couple of eggs the other week and the day before yesterday we found 3 in the nest box (none of which were hers) all tidied into the centre! Yesterday, gone again and only a Mercedes egg. Sioux was on her own again today. Haven't looked yet - might have to peer up her bum later on!
