do i get the washing machine fixed

Recommended Posts

I have a washer dryer that is six years old. ALready the dryer senser has failed on it so have to do it on timed rather than automatic. Not really a problem. However, the last couple of washes we have noticed that it has sprung a leak. Its not the pipes at the back. We pulled it out and tipped it. Going by the patch its near the front on the bottom but i stuck my hand in there and could not find any damp patches.

Do i try and find a repairer and it cost me a lot or give up and goand get a new one.

I know this may sound like sucking eggs but have you checked your filter??

repairs are costly I agree. :? I always have mine covered for 5 years and if they go wrong after that I replace... as I figure they get a hammering here at the house and they deserve a retirement.

I would go for the try to repair it yourself option. We have an old machine and wehn it leaks it is generally the door seal. You can buy them online and fit them pretty easily yourself. OH fitted a new pump very cheaply recently but then found that it was a small slit in the door seal  - oh well, at least is has a new pump now - that was very cheap online too. Having said that our machine is fairly old - made in the days when things were built to last. As already said some newer machines are best just replaced.

Colin is right, if it's over 5 years old and starts to go wrong, it generally isn't cost efective to repair it. My last machine lasted for 10 years, then started to go badly wrong, have now replaced it with a fabbo Zanussi machine.

Always go for seperate washing machine and dryer though - the good advice of my repair man.

I agree ditch it if you can, I rarely use mine and if I need something dry quickly it goes on a radiator. I have an airer in the kitchen where theres underfloor heating do the clothese get dry quickly.

They drink up the electric so if you can get rid and not miss it thats the way I would go.

My washing machine threw a fit last weekend and blew it's fuse. Mr Griffin replaced the fuse but we knew it was only a matter of time before it gave up the ghost completely. Today it's stopped spinning  Rest in peace dear washing machine, oh how I loved you these past eight years

If I can't buy one tomorrow and bring it home I'm going to have to take a drive over to my mum on Sunday with several loads of washing

Washing machines always go wrong when its time to wash the cuvet covers or something like that, never when you have only 2 items in the laundry basket :roll:

Oh how true..... hubbie is going away on saturday so I wasn hoping to clear all the washing before he comes back. Luckily I have managed to get his washing done for his trip!!!

Still debating whether to get the dryer or not. Bearing in mind the one that has just died was 6 years old and has never been faulty before (apart from drying sensor not working) then I didnt think it was that bad.......Whether I get one or not I will still be making a more concious effort to peg things out...

If it's stopped spinning it's more than likely only the brushes which need replacing.

Ours broke own a couple of Sundays ago when I was going to do the school clothes wash. Typical  Luckily my parents live close by so they washed it all for me :D It had stopped working a few times before, but it was usually due to the outflow pipe being blocked. Normally a spot of drain cleaner did the job. But not this time. We couldn't find any of the documentation that went with it as to when we bought it so we decided to get a new one. We've got this http://www.dixons.co.uk/martprd/store/dix_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0325094844.1265400679@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdfadejidlfeddcflgceggdhhmdgmk.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=707073&category_oid=-28877 and so far it is the best machine I've ever had.

If ever I do ony have two items in the basket - it would only be for a nano second!! Just as well that washing is my hobby! :?

There does seem to built in obsolescence with white goods these days. My mother's first washing machine lasted for about twenty years and even then was only replaced for a more modern one rather than it having broken!

Our last washer/drier combo lasted about 6 years, we debated whether to go for one again - so far the current one is still going strong after 9 years - never had a problem. They do have a reputation for being less reliable than single appliances. We use to be in a hard water area and now live in a sof"Ooops, word censored!"er area - I think that makes a big difference to washing machines.
