cheekychook
Havent been on the forum for ages but back now! Thought I would let you know about our wee chook Edwina - en Ex batt we got last April with her three friends Rosaleen. Louise and Penny. During the really bad weather with thick snow at Xmas/January we still opened the run and let them go out in the big garden. On the 6th January we discovered Edwina missing when we went to close the run and Eglu door. We searched for ages in the garden and surrounding area in case she had got out of the garden but to no avail. We even went out with headtorches and looked in the evening/night. The next day we continued but with heavy hearts as it was absolutely freezing and with even more snow. We guessed that she had perhaps been taken by a fox as the wild animals were starving due to the weather so thought one had taken its chance and come into the garden. The constant snow flurries would have hidden any trace. We were so sad as she was such a lovely girl and so cheeky and the others seemed a bit subdued without her. We still continued to look for her even though we knew in out hearts it was fruitless (It was so cold we had a heat pad in the nestbox where the girls slept to keep them warm). Then on the 21st January - TWO WEEKS later, my husband was in the garden trying to get the ice off some of the bushes and shrubs (the snow was still thick on the ground) when out walks Edwina from under a low lying wide bush. I had looked there and even used a shovel to scoop out snow to have a proper look but it seems that she must have gone right to the very back of the bush (its a very wide growing bush). She was a bit wobbly and really light in weight and her feathers were a bit icy and messy but she was alive. It was unbelievable and when myhusband phoned me at work to say he had found her I thought he meant her body! Its just fantastic having her back and goes against the thought that Ex Batts are somehow less hardy than their posh cousins! She is back to her dominant self now and its great to have her back after her snowy soiltary confinement!
