Helly Welly
As the pain from my Hypermobility Syndrome has got better, i've found myself not taking my co-codamol as regularly as i was. I've been on 30/500ml strength for about two years, maybe longer. Anyway, i was feeling really rough and realised that i hadn't actually taken any tablets for three days. It's been five days now and the withdrawal symptoms are just horrendous. It's like i've got flu without the cold bit. My arms are so painful, but really restless. Last night, i woke up every half hour in order to stretch manically. This morning i was restless, shivery and exhausted so i slept until midday. My arms still feel really sore and restless and i swear if i stretch once more i'll scream. But i've come this far so i don't want to give up now. I know that any pain i get can be handled by my fab Tens machine so i don't ever want to have the evil codiene again. Sorry to rant but let it be a warning to all, coming off codeine has been likened to coming off heroin and it feels like hell.

Charlottechicken
Sorry to rant but let it be a warning to all, coming off codeine has been likened to coming off heroin and it feels like hell. Rant away! Sounds like you have been very intuitive with your body not to keep taking the painkillers when you didn't need them anymore, or could manage the pain differently. I think codeine is part of the opiate group of painkillers anyway, so feel free to be very pleased with yourself
Ain't Nobody Here
Poor you, sounds horrible . I hope the symptoms pass soon .
Chucky Mama
My neighbours had the same thing. They were taking over the counter headache medicines with codeine a few years ago and suddenly realised that they were hooked Hoep that is soon passes and that you feel better soon
Woodcat
You have my total sympathy it's really horrid i was on it solidly for about three years and i remember with horror the time i had coming off it. I only take the stuff when i'm tearing my hair out now and i certainly never take the full days dose anymore. Horrid horrid stuff.
Helly Welly
What makes it even worse is that people with Hypermobility Syndrome often have IBS as well. Codeine actually relieves the symptoms of IBS so now i've got it bad.....let's just say i've not been able to leave the house
Sheilaz
It's great if you feel you can manage the pain in other ways, but must be a nightmare coming off that dosage after a long time, is your doctor advising you? Feel free to rant, we'll send you plenty of Omlet gentle hugs. Presumably some of the symptoms you have now were actually being masked by the co-codamol to good effect? It may be hard to tell just now what is due to withdrawal, & what is due to the syndrome. Co codamol does seem to vary in how it affects people. You must be feeling so rough, I wish you an easier time ahead, sending you lots of positive Omlet vibes. xx
The Dogmother
You poor thing Helen, you're being very brave and I hope it eases soon. It's nasty, nasty stuff! I'm allergic to morphine, hence other opiates, of which codeine is one. I was once given some codeine in hospital when they ignored my notes and Medic Alert bracelet... very, very nasty

Lewis
I think Father was on this and tramadol(sp?) and a few other bits - not all at the same time - because of his back and other stuff, only for a few months and even then he was struggling when he came off it - can't imagine after a few years! Hope you're feeling a bit better soon

Cinnamon
Poor you, it sounds ghastly. I can sympathise with the IBS too,but had no idea that codeine helped with that I used to use Feminax once a month, but they have now stopped producing the one with Codeine in, & nothing else seems to work for me Funnily, when taking Feminax for those 3 days a month,my IBS did seem to settle. Anyhow,I do hope that things perk up for you
Helly Welly
Thanks for all the good wishes guys, it really helps. Been feeling better today, my arms are still aching but not as restless and the IBS has calmed down a bit. Unfortunately, my hips have been really hurting but i'm now sat on a hot water bottle which has helped no end. I used to take Tramadol at the same time as co-codamol, i swear i rattled when i walked. These medicines really should come with more warning. Mind you, at the time i was more concerned about the pain than the withdrawal so i'm not sure i'd have taken any notice of any warnings.
