The History Of Aprons

Recommended Posts

My dad just emailed me this, I thought it might be appreciated here. Does anyone still use an apron for any of these reasons?

'The History of APRONS'

The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, because she only had a few. It was easier to wash aprons than dresses and they used less material, but along with that, it served as a pot-holder for removing hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying childrens tears and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears...

From the chicken coop

the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.

And when the weather was cold grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow bent over the hot wood stove...

Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden it carried all sorts of vegetables.

After the peas had been shelled it carried out the hulls.

In Autumn the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron and the men knew it was time to come in from the paddocks to dinner.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace the 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.

Send this to those who would know (and love) the story about Grandma's apron.

REMEMBER:

Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window-sill to cool.

Her granddaughters set theirs on the window-sill to thaw.

They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron.

I never caught Anything from an apron But Love

Awwww, thats great, its amazing how its gone out of fashion when it obviously has so many uses. I like the quick dusting one

As for the germs, well I think a bit of muck is good for kids, its builds up their immunity!

I do have an apron but only use it occasionally when baking or cooking esecially messy things. I do keep thinking i should use it more because Im always ruining clothes!

That was lovely :D I have an apron that I wear most times I am cooking, especially baking. I sometimes forget, like when making a tomato sauce which tends to be volcanic

Thats definitely my worst thing to cook too - splatters everywhere

I hate it if I forget to wear my apron sometimes and then just continue to wipe my hands where the apron should be

I never wear an apron when cooking anything. The one my mum made doesn't have any pockets and is made from shiny material that can just be wiped down-however its no good for wiping wet/floury etc hands on!

I love the idea of an apron but mum's just isn't very practical so i don't see the point-maybe i'll have to make myself one! It can be my project for the next few weeks!

I nearly always wear an apron with a pocket when cooking, infact I encourage OH to wear one too as he is unbelievably messy in the kitchen!! I often forget to take it off when answering the door  Infact when ES has friends round one of them always looks for the homemade bread if I'm wearing it when he calls
