sadietoo
There are photos in the Mail Egluntyne - massively magnified ones so it looks like B-Movie killer dust... A bit off topic I know, but there was a great cartoon in the "Eye" a few weeks ago which I have on my notice board. The setting is a doctor's office and the doctor is saying to the patient.."Mmmm high blood pressure I'm afraid...I recommend less Daily Mail more broadsheet"
Ziggy
Well OH would consider any train, bus, car, bike BUT as he's the Captain he'll have to fly the plane back!!! My goodness, sorry, hadn't realised... OK, for the captain obviously there are even more responsibilities... no scooting back to the uk by any means leaving the aircraft behind even if that was feasable!! My DH has now managed to achieve 1/8 of the way back, hopefully 1/4 by tomorrow evening... Mind you, while I agree with a lot of the environmental concerns regarding flying.... there is also the disturbing question, if it takes 3hrs to fly to finland, why would someone want to take a week?? Mother nature is certainly reminding us of a few harsh realities... let us hope this one keeps casualties low, unlike some of the last few years disasters in other parts of the worlds... LuckyChickenLover-
Dunno if this has already been said, but from what, I heard planes should start flying out of England at 1pm tommorow (Saturday 17th)
Geoid
Dunno if this has already been said, but from what, I heard planes should start flying out of England at 1pm tommorow (Saturday 17th) Should, they might not, wind directions etc can change suddenly, so the UK may be a no fly zone for some time to come... Ziggy
Yeah, updates come every few hours, pushing the time when things might start taking off again (and coming in again) further away each time... no blame, if it's for safety that's fine enough, better have inconvenienced people on the ground than people at risk in the sky... Thing is, once things start taking off (and coming in) again, it will take a while to get everyone to where they should be... bit of a crowd waiting... AJuff
OH tells me he has been given a 5am take off slot from Sharm subject to weather conditions. He may be back soooooon!
Valkyrie
My neighbour just made it back in time - another is still stuck in Egypt - and he's an air traffic controller! But it has been absolute bliss in the garden - RAF Odiham, Farnborough, Lasham, Blackbush, Heathrow - I could sit and listen to the wildlife without droning or harsh jet sounds - even those nasty whining micro thingies. Although it isn't much fun for those stuck away from home or can't escape for their holidays. Amazing how much damage the ash can do to a plane! Cate in NZ
It's dreadful news, my heart goes out to all those people in Iceland who are having to live through all this, rather than being mildly inconvenienced by not being able to be exactly where they want to be when they want to be. I know it's a total pain, my DS, aged 18, should be mid air right now, on his way back from a 3 week holiday back "home". Instead he's cosied up at MIL's & praying for an early re-booked flight. I'm struggling with the fact that it's pretty darned difficult sorting out very much from this distance.......but at least he's safe, I'd rather he stay there another week than fly in dangerous circumstances, and we are lucky, whilst he's run out of money MIL's feeding & accomodating him for as long as is necessary, & we've other friends & family who will help out if necessary. I sincerely hope that this eruption ends soon & that Iceland is able to recover from such terrible devastation.......and I also have my fingers & toes tightly crossed that all travellers, including Seb, are soon able to complete their journeys safely
ali-s
My car and all the outside windowsills were covered with a layer of fine grey dust yesterday morning. Jack could smell a faint eggy smell later on in the day but this had gone by the time I had finished work.

Valkyrie
Erin was listening to the news about asthma sufferers - "what should I do?" so I told her if she smells eggy air to go indoors. "What if it's indoors too?" Blame your father and you've survived so far.

SarahJo
Don't rely on the 1am sunday time - OH got 2 flights ready last night to fly out and by the time they had got everything sorted, crew etc it was to late again, missed the window. As this Volcano is still giving it some - I think it will be a longer wait than we think, and then there's the priority of do you send empty planes to bring back as many as possible in the flying window, or take new passengers who then could also be stranded in a weeks time All the stranded people are not just holiday makers - they are pilots, crew, doctors, nurses, teachers and other employed needed back in the UK They also have families and children who are missing them. I hope this is all sorted at the soonest time - but even then I think there will have to be patience while all the "backlog" is sorted out. In the meantime can Brian Cox do some live reporting ..........

Ziggy
DH is now in a ferry from Finland to Sweden, will then cross Sweden by train, take another ferry to Denmark, and rent a car there to drive to Paris where he was supposed to work next week... What a trip!!
redbug
he will definately see some view from out of the window Ziggy. But yes what a journey. You will have to log how long it takes.
Ziggy
He has a colleague with him, so at least he has someone to chat with and have meals with and so on... and yes wonderful views of islands off the finnish coast... The ferry trip and train bit are the easy bit... I'm not keen on him driving 1300kms after that though!! Good thing he and his colleague are together and can share the driving... Can't wait to have him home!!

redbug
Yes it will be good to get him home safe and sound after his adventure. Has he got to be in Paris long?
Ziggy
Paris till wednesday night only, so he is looking into booking train or ferry crossing for that too... How is everyone else doing? Is AJuff's OH still stuck in Egypt? Must be strange for people working in planes and airport and are at home right now, to be home not knowing when they'll get back to work!
