Christian
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8621407.stm I hope the locals are ok? Just landed back from Duesseldorf and my Newcastle flight has been cancelled. All UK arrivals have been cancelled due to volcanic ash in the atmosphere! OH is in Germany and they landed, got the passengers off and are taking off again without passengers as the cloud is heading south! They wanted to leave before the airport closed! Christian
I am off for 10 days now! What timing! Email from work asking for volunteers. If they hadn't cut back on so many staff, they wouldn't need them! Won't be answering the phone either Chelsea. Thanks SC!

chelsea
I am off for 10 days now! What timing! Result! There seems to be some kind of crisis every month now affecting air travel, what with snow and everything else.
Geoid
All flights have been banned from taking off, flying in or entering UK airspace from midday, as the ash can clog engines and is messing up the radar. This is great! (for my geography work)
patsylabrador
My son's supposed to be flying out from Heathrow on Saturday night for Australia. Do you think it will be ok by then? The thought of this holiday kept him going through Afghanistan, I'd hate it to all go wrong.
Hayleybug
it may well be good news for people who work in airports and arent in work for the next couple of days, but its extremely bad news for people like me who are due to fly out on holidays!! due to leave liverpool airport early sunday morning for naples, just hope its cleared off by then and there are no further eruptions in the meantime... WarrensWorld
We live near Belmullet, which is the crossing point for inbound and outbound flights from Europe to North America. There's always 5 or 6 aircraft coming in or going out, but not today. Haven't seen a vapour trail all day, we don't hear the aircraft. Hope all's well with the people in Iceland, and "Ooops, word censored!"ody gets hurt......

SarahJo
OH texted me this morning with the news at 6.30 Took the dog out for a walk and all the "sky trails" as I call them were non-existant. Saw 1 plane come over which had just taken off - but they were stopping all flights from 7am. Not seen or heard any since - really earily quiet in the sky
Lesley
Very quiet in the sky here as well. I hope all those who need to fly manage to sort out arrangements, it must be so worrying for some people. My thoughts are also with the Icelanders as well - they have a lot to cope with up there and it will affect so much of their everyday life. Guest
we're under the flight path for John lennon airport and it's lovely and quiet today! Thoughts are with all those affected but I can't help relishing the peace and quiet!
Cinnamon
Apparently the last time this one blew,it went off for 2 years What is 'it'? The Volcano It continued erupting for 2 years, &, one might assume, spewing ash everywhere.
fluffyfeet
Just had to break the news to my boss who had just got out of bed in Wisconsin, US. His flight has been cancelled, the next available flight is already full so he is unable to leave the States until at least Saturday, and we've just heard that the volcano has chucked another load of stuff out so don't know what is going to happen. He thought we were pulling his leg, then he asked if it was a terrorist thing The coast road (which I believe is their main road) on Iceland is closed and because of the heat the glacier has melted a bit and rivers have risen by 3 metres in a very short space of time. One of my colleagues has just shown me an Icelandic website with live footage of the eruption and it's pretty scary and fascinating at the same time. Fingers crossed for the Icelanders and their homes. Dawn xx
scrambledhead
Am sorry if this has affected travel plans and am sure it will not affect our health or that of our chickens but please spare a thought for those of us who are crew and flying today. Anyone with a long memory may recall the BA 747 which lost all 4 engines due to volcanic ash but luckily still managed to land safely! Old Speckled Hen
At least we may have spectacular red sunsets to look forward to I remember when Mt St Helens blew its top in 1980 there were wonderful sunsets round the world for quite some time. I remember seeing a documentary about Krakatoa and the resulting fiery red sunsets. There are some beautiful paintings of them by William Ashcroft. Seagazer
Has anyone in Iceland actually been hurt? I've not seen or read any news for a couple of days (head in the sand ) so haven't heard anything. All I've heard on the radio is about flights being cancelled.
Geoid
I wouldn't think so, satellites can detect when a volcano is about to erupt, giving vital time for areas effected by the volcano to be evacuated etc
SarahJo
Scrambledhead - thoughts were immediately with flight crew and other staff today from me. OH was trying to get as many flights "out" as possible this morning as they knew they only had till possibly 7am. If the airspace is not safe, then its not safe - its all in the hands of mother nature, not the airlines or their staff, hope people bear that in mind I feel bad not only for travellers - but also crew who are stuck away from home, they still have childcare issues etc too

It is very unlikely to effect health as the ash cloud is too high up in the atmosphere to do so. I saw a program about that flight BA 009 from Kuala Lumpur (air crash investigation) it was quite interesting.
