riane
We've had Rita and Mavis for 2 weeks now and all is going well. But my 2 year old daughter has had a really bad cough and today has had to go to hospital because her chest was so bad. They have said she might have asthma and have given her an inhaler to try Could there be any connection with the arrival of the chickens and her cough. Could it be an allergic type thing? Or is it just coincidence? very worried mummy
Martin B
I hope it's not an allergy. Take Care and all the best! x
AnnieP
Hi Maria. Sorry to hear about your little girl. I know people can be allergic to feathers, but has she really been that close to them, ie. holding them lots? I find it hard to believe that even if she was feather allergic, with the chickens, outside, and just in their run or scratching around near her, that it would make that happen.... I'm no medical expert though! By the way, I've moved your post to the nesting box where more people will probably see it.... not sure where it belongs really
riane
no she has been in the garden with them but has not held them. She did stroke them a few times. However, she has never been allergic to anything else and we have a cat, rabbit and guinea pig....Its probably just a coincidence but when the doctor mentioned it I had never thought about an allergy to chickens! and been new to all this i thought i would ask. Karen & co.
Sorry to hear your little girl is poorly I too would have thought it was coincidence her cough has developed now, especially as she has no other pet allergies, and hasn't been holding the chooks:? Hope she is feeling better soon karen x
theherd123
I worried about this too before i got my girls as my OH has very bad asthma and is allergic to many pets - came out in hives all up his arms when he first met my bears and cant do cats at all but he had no reaction to the chooks at all Lets hope its not the chooks and she gets better soon. hillfamily
Sorry to hear your little girl's poorly Hopefully just a coincidence - there have been a lot of chest infections around at the mo with can trigger asthma attacks - could be that. Egluntyne
Sheffield Children's Hospital eh Maria.....we were regular attenders at one time... Re the chicken/feathers/asthma thingy......I was once rushed into hospital (blue light flashing...I don't do things by halves!) as I had an absolutely dreadful asthma attack.....it turned out that the trigger for this attack was the chicken feathers in my pillow...I had noticed for a while that I was very wheezy at night. However...just wanted to say that I have never had any problems since having chickens. Your little one has probably picked up the latest bug doing the rounds. hope she's OK. Popcorn
Hi Maria, We've all suffered terribly from chesty coughs in our house this year. I've never had a cough like it or ever suffered from chestyness, but I've had a terrible time with it recently. I lost my voice for two whole weeks, it was so bad. I've never experienced anything like it. My 9 month old son was also given an inhaler to try and calm his breathing down, as he suffered badly too and was wheezing terribly. He's never actually got rid of his cough altogether since he came down with it but it is getting much better now. It's a worrying time having to go to hospital. I really do believe it's a nasty viral infection and I hope your daughter recovers soon.
