Buying train tickets in advance

Recommended Posts

Thanks guys, I needed to book some train to tickets to go to London in June (to see Bon Jovi :dance: ) and came across this thread. Haven't booked a train journey in years, so followed your advice and saved a fortune. Three adults there and back for £87! My sister wasn't so impressed when I told her as she has spent nearly twice this just for herself and OH  . If only she'd listened to me when I suggested she keep chickens...

The buildings for Medway campus are lovely, but the surrounding towns are horrible. I live here. The low-level aggression and violence is horrible. The 'traditional' locals really don't like students (or anyone, come to that). There is one very good grungey student pub in Chatham (Tap n Tin), but I don't know what other student entertainments there are round and about. The other thing is, getting about in Medway is a pain. It's five towns splurged into each other. Gillingham and Chatham are really awful areas. The public transport is erratic and expensive and the routes aren't brilliantly planned out. There are some lovely things, like The Strand leisure area and country parks, but the towns proper - I wouldn't recommend it at all. Especially not for such a potentially brilliant formative experience like uni. What about the trad Classics towns, like Durham?

ps: just seen Warwick has quite high teaching satisfaction and does offer a classics course. I went to Warwick and it was a great uni. Brilliant tutors, Leamington and Coventry both good, safe towns, and campus was just magnificent.

Personally speaking,I would love her to go to Warwick, as it looks great & a few friends have children who have been & they have been very happy, but she doesn't want to study Greek or latin as part of her Classics course, but do joint honours with English Lit instead

So,as far as we can tell only 4 places do this course - Reading (just down the road,so naturally she doesn't want to go there!), Exeter,Lampeter & Kent.

Its a NIGHTMARE this choosing a Uni business!

Its a NIGHTMARE this choosing a Uni business!

Tis!! Much worse than choosing schools.

I went round all the vet schools + stuff, realised I wouldn't get the grades ... went to Aberystwyth to look at Animal Science and loved it, then had to find another 4 places to fill the gaps

I only visited Aber out of the 5, fortunately got all 5 offers and so Aber it is :D

You can go when there aren't official open days too - I know some places have tours every Wednesday so you can go + look round, just have to phone + ask :P

Agreed. I originally wanted to do Optometry, but only 8 places do it and they require 3 As, realistically I'm going to get AAB or ABB, so could apply to do it at Bradford, Anglia Ruskin, Glasgow Caledonia, Ulster or City. Anglia Ruskin is the most realistic option and they require the lowest entry requirements.

I'm currently thinking about doing a Biology with an industrial placement now, possibly at Durham or UEA. Durham's gorgeous and I like the idea of the separate colleges and the boathouses! My sister went there and had a really good time. Am also thinking of the possibility of Orthoptics too.

Hi Cinnamon

I've been locked out for a week because of IT problems so couldn't contribute - frustrating! I just wanted to say be aware when buying train tickets, that there are stations which act as " boundaries". And if you buy a ticket to that station and then to your final destination, you save pounds and pounds.

An example would be Banbury. If I go to Birmingham but ask for the journey to be ticketed to Banbury and then from Banbury to Birmingham and vice versa on return, I save £20. If I buy a through ticket from Didcot to Gravesend in Kent, it's actually cheaper then a ticket to London! And you can stop in London obviously and not use the rest of the ticket. No-one tells you about these boundary stations unless you ask.

I hope she gets into where she wants to go- exciting times!

Tricia

Exeter is lovely....My daughter is there doing Geography and French, but one of her house mates is doing classics...

My god-daughter went to Reading...although the decision was met with a sharp intake of breath from me, because if you watch South Today ( as we do here in sunny sussex) any problems with violence etc always seem to be in Reading (or Brighton) but she had a fantastic time, and apparently there are days when you don't go in to town if you are a student...

A campus based university was our first choice too for our daughter..but I have to say her original halls were some way off the uni, and involved a daily twenty minute walk up "Cardiac Hill"..so not that wonderful late at night until she got to know a few people....

Next year we are set to start again with DS....he has so far shown an interest in Birmingham Cardiff and Bristol...and Bath (IMO we looked at Bristol with my daughter and they were very very precious and DD decided it really wasn't somewhere she wanted to go)

Warwick has an excellent reputation

Its very daunting looking at unis and it puts all that worrying about the right school thing into perspective...

Good luck!!!

Durham has a 'cardiac hill' too  My OH went there and if you want to keep fit it's great lots of hills and you can go to the top of the cathederal tower too if you want extreme exercise. I did it once in the fog very eerie :anxious:

Durham is a beautiful place, well it was 25 years ago :?

Agreed, It was most funny having the people from Queen's Campus come down from the Castle at my sister's graduation wearing stilettos on cobbled pavements! Not a good idea!
