riven
not sure whats wrong. She's standing hunched in the run and not showing any interest in food or water. Examined her but cant find anything obvious. She's laid this week just fine. A few feathers missing from the feather puller hen (ordered anti-peck from Omlet over a week ago but no sign of it) but no wounds. Any ideas? I cant really take her to the vets on a bank holiday sunday as I cant afford it.
Lynn
I can't really help much - sorry, but perhaps best to bring her in and keep her warm - do you have a box you can put her in? I saw Egluntine online so hopefully she or someone with experience will be along soon. I hope she improves quickly.
riven
Am bringing her in. She is breathing so heavily I can see her whole body moving from the house. But its not noisy breathing. I don't think she is going to make it you know
riven
her eyes are shut too. The only 'emergency' vet is on the other side of the city and I don't have a car and its £120 to go in on a sunday. Any emergency remedies I can try? I think the vet would suggest putting her down. Could she be crop bound? I can feel her crop but it feels like the others crops (been out comparing) She is only 2 and a half.
figarogir1
Really sorry to hear about your girl. I'm afraid I don't have any more suggestions than bringing her in and keeping her warm in a box. Hopefully someone with experience will be along soon.
chickinboy
I'm no expert, but I've got one that does this occasionally - with her it's normally a softie on the way - the hunching is normally the tell tale sign. She clenches her whole body, as if giving it a bit of a squeeze. Once she lays it she perks right up. I suppose if there's nothing else obvious it could be that. I think I read somewhere that bringing her in and keeping her in a quiet, dark place might move things along. Hope she's okay
riven
she has been like this hours. am calling vets but the emergency ones are miles away. this only ever happens on a sunday!
Ms Tilytinkle
I was going to say the same, softie, one of our chickens hunches up & is very still & her breathing seems heavier than usual then after 2 days she lays a softie & then is bright eyed ~& fluffy tailed again. Bless you, its so so awful . Bless her little Soul too, hope she perks up very soon - is she taking any drink or treats ie grapes MsTilythoughtsarewithyouandwishesthemainingSundaybecomesapeacefulone
Space Chick
I agree, it sounds like she could have a softie on the way. Keep a close eye on her for a day or two, if she passes a softie she will be fine again, if she doesn't then it would be worth taking her to a vets. Make sure she is eating and drinking though. Chicken Shirl
I agree, sounds like a softie. One of mine takes herself off to the dark shed for a while, and when the softie is laid, she eats and drinks straight away and is as bright as a button. They are miserable when it is going on though. Hope your girl is better soon.
riven
thansk, its given me some hope. I have her in a cat basket inside now. While I was washing it out the others had started pecking her and she now has some nasty peck wounds. She has been like this since this morning. I think she was quiet yesterday but cant remember now. If its a softie will she stay like this a couple of days? Should I put water and food in containers (worried about her kicking them over)? Nearest emergency vet is 7 miles (and to be honest, they know nothing about chickens). I cant find anyone with a car or I'd go. Thanks for all the advice. I hate seeing one of my chickens sick and feel completely helpless.
Chicken Shirl
I would put a small amount of food and water near her, or offer her something from your hand. The other hens will pick on her if she is weak, so a good idea to keep her away from them for the time-being. Maybe take this as an opportunity to build her up a bit before she goes back to the flock. {Hugs} We all know how worried you must be. riven
she doesn't want to eat. Not even fresh sweetcorn (her fouvourite) or snails.
AbigailGrace
Hello.. Mine is like that too.. I'm really worried and just came on here for some advice.. She is stood doing nothing puffed up and keeps shutting her eyes.. She isn't eating or drinking and they are on the grass and the other two are eating the grass but she is just stood.. Hmmm.. I dont know what to do.. Shall I bring her in the house? Put her in a basket with a towel or staw? Its really upsetting.. Oh and her crop seems very small and rather firm.. I gave her a massage to see if that helped.. Any advice would be great.. Thankyou and i'm sorry Riven I know how you feel at this moment in time.. brambles
I'm so sorry she's poorly. I hope it's something that will resolve like a softie. I'm still in shock from losing my girl yesterday. These girls of ours, eh? Keep her comfy and warm and quiet - have you got any little coop cups to clip into the cat basket so that she's access to food and water? Is she drinking? could you try dribbling some water down her throat? Fingers crossed for all the poorly ones out there. x
