Hung parliament

Recommended Posts

I was talking to my boss about this last night. We're both bookies and were interested in the prices available for a Conservative majority, the total number of seats being between 325 & 349.

I've heard it said that the prices at, say, Betfair are far more accurate indicators of the way things are going to go than the likes of Mori polls.

I'm quite undecided too. This is a true marginal seat. But I'm quite miffed with the local Lib Dems. I have been a general supporter of their policies since they only had about 12 MP's and very little support. But in recent years when I've tried to ask questions of the local Lib Dems, or even offer support, they've either not replied or sent a very general message without actually answering the question. Last year they couldn't even field a candidate from Tamworth for our Council seat.

This year I asked a couple of key questions of our candidate and I haven't even got an acknowledgement of my e-mail by an official, let alone an actual reply. I have not seen any Lib Dems around asking for our support. I have seen plenty of Tories and Labour folks, and David Cameron bothered to come to Tamworth (the others didn't).

I have also had experience, before I retired, of being a Government Adviser to both Tory and Labour Governments. I have to say that the way in which they dealt with the scientific advice being offered by the advisory groups of which I was a member was quite different, and not altogether expected.

Then again, our current MP has been very good, not a naughty boy with expenses, and actually seems to listen and raise questions in Parliament on behalf of constituents.

So, I've long been a supporter of a party who can't be bothered to acknowledge my questions, don't send anybody round to gather support (from a known supporter), and can't even field a candidate who lives in the town for our Council. Do I vote for them anyway (I don't feel they deserve my vote, TBH), or for our current, good MP because he is a good MP, regardless of which party he is in, or just vote to keep out the party I don't want in Government? If I can't make up my mind, goodness knows which way the election will go on the day!

Just found This - interesting. The odds are shortening on Tory overall majority (some bookmakers making them almost evens) although hung parliament is still odds on.

This is why i want to be able to vote for a local MP separately from the governing party. I have often wanted two different things.

Apparently I have the equivalent of 0.072 votes... :( I couldn't not turn up to vote...but I can't bring myself to vote for the present incumbent, and a vote for either of the two other main parties is a waste here...I certainly won't be voting for the BNP candidate (i'm very scandalised we even have a candidate):shock: I've been thinking long and hard about this..and I think I may just have to spoil my ballot paper in protest... :(:(

Helly Welly, I'm in complete agreement ( maybe we should start our own party ? ) We are in a marginal constituency, and I really don't like the crowd we have in at the moment, they have wrecked Herefordshire ( IMHO ) but if I vote for who I'd like locally , it would be a wasted vote nationally as it were. Think it will be eeny meeny miny mo at the ballot box tomorrow, either that or I'll wait and see who makes the effort to visit our village and beg for votes outside the polling station

Like others, I hate the current system; have always lived in safe Tory seats but the MP here is notorious for being an arrogant so & so who never replies to letters etc etc, BUT the Lib Dem supports hunting, so whilst I like the Lib Dems nationally and have been imnpressed with Vince Cable and Nick Clegg, I really struggle with the concept of voting for a pro-hunting individual - maybe we should all just toss a 3 sided coin - not a euphamism !!

Meezers - looks like we are in the same area - Herefordshire!

Got any ideas who to vote for as I am in need of inspiration after our last disastrous incumbant!

I googled ' who should I vote for? ' , you'll get several quizzes which you can fill out and you're results are matched with the parties policies- mine was very surprising ! The party I was inclined to vote for actually came last in my results :o and some of the ideas I feel strongly about are supported by a party I wasn't considering, certainly helped me make up my mind.

Personally, I'm steadily becoming more and more enamoured of a hung Parliament. However, my main concern is that, with 650 members, that's either going to take a long time or use an awful lot of rope.

nose enema

I too would like to be able to vote seperately. We have a conservative mp who is very good and would like to keep him but don't necessarily want Cons in power.

What bugs me most though is that a party with no nearly the most amount of votes can get into power if they have the right votes in the right places.

None of us should be calculating what our vote is worth. Really all ours votes should be worth one.

Have a look here

http://www.voterpower.org.uk/

to see whether you really NEED to get out there and vote.

Interesting. My vote is worth one the equivalent of 0.052 votes.

The average UK voter has 4.76x more voting power than me

I just had a look at these and decided which I most agreed with. Think I've decided now

I did the quizzes too and came out with the 2 I was expecting, Lib Dem + Green.

I just "had words" with my daughter who says I should be voting to protect her job (now that I am retired and do not need to vote to protect my small business). She is an actor and the lib dems are the only party who have pledged for the arts. What do you lot think? Do you think it is an actor's RIGHT to have grants and subsidies at a cost to education, the NHS and ,dare I say it....defence? I think the arts will survive till we as a country are richer, the rest will struggle.

I don't think what I think here matters much, to be honest; my personal opinions on supporting the arts or not are just that - personal - and no doubt others' opinions will differ in some way. The only area in your post where I would voice my opinion, OSH, was the situation of one person trying to impose on another's electoral choice. I know she's your daughter, and that I'm on thin ice in voicing any kind of criticism, but my opinion is that she should use her vote to voice her opinion and let you use yours similarly.

I am my mother's proxy now that she lives abroad, and when my mother asked, she was undecided. She told me who she didn't want, but that she trusted my opinion beyond that. I suggested I shouldn't have more than one vote's influence, and asked her to let me know which choice she came to. It sounds priggish, but making someone else's choice just didn't feel right. That, incidentally, is the only time I've discussed specific choices with anyone in my family, and I still have never told anyone how I've voted in any election.

Am surprised to hear that people who live abroad can still vote here. I presume they still pay taxes?

I've just been to do my civic duty, and there was a throng of photographers at the polling station. I don't think they were there for me. I imagine it means that Cleggy is about to put in an appearance.

Not been yet but as one of the only 2 non Conservative towns in Herts i will be going to keep it that way :D mainly to keep our town the same its difficult when you have to decide what your vote will mean as we have had the same party for over 10years and they have done lots of good things here especially with Enviromental issues.

Oh and i have a 0.440 % vote , sounds rubbish but better than others!

.848 here. Very marginal.

Our MP is a very personable local young man, runs trail races, does stunts for various good causes and EVERY week has his smiling mug in the local paper, a bit of a joke really.

We've actually seen quite a bit of activity from the higher echelons here recently.Strange :?

Temporarily "oop north" seems to be important

I'm sure the rural plight will go back to being forgotten/ignored once the shouting is done and votes counted

I was planning on staying up tonight to see if I've won any money but apparently 22 constituancies are not counting until tomorrow morning and Thirsk & Malton are not even voting until May 27th because one of the candidates has died.

You just pipped us OSH I though we would have the record with 0.831 in a very marginal seat.

I would always vote but it is good to know that my vote has a chance of meaning something. the next problem is who to vote for :?

I have voted the same way for many years, but we were in Tewkesbury constituancy until this election for national stuff and Cheltenham borough for local government.

Cheltenham has two very good candidates, the current MP is Lib Dem is locally born and bred and has done pretty well for the town. His nearest rival is Tory and also locally born and bred, I do think that a local person will always have more passion for an area. We have had so much literature from the Tory and a personal visit, about half the amount and no visit from the Lib Dem. The Tories really want this seat. Having said that we also have a very colourful local character who stands every time for the Loonies.

I have never been so undecided, I will probably vote the same way as usual, but I am leaving it until this evening so that I can continue my research.

We are one of the seats that won't be counted until tomorrow, but we will still watch the story unfold tonight.
