Going to uni

Recommended Posts

A big box of tissues.......for you!!! As if you are at all like me you will cry yourself halfway home each time you take them... for no good reason really other than they seem to be doing so well- without you! My eldest finishes very soon. his last exam is next Friday - looking back now it really seems to have flown by. He is coming home- for now - having got a job back in Manchester. However he is so independent these days I somehow think it will not be for long.

The online shop is a great idea. Yours must clearly be an eater if he is very athletic - mine was always looking for food so home delivery to his house was always appreciated.

Definitely a mobile contract with the bill paid by you and a student railcard. My DD was utterly miserable for her 4 years at uni, including one year abroad. These things enabled her to keep in touch whenever she wanted. It was heartbreaking for us but worse for her

She did stick it out though and is now doing a post grad law degree and is as happy as a lark so they do get over it :D

Good luck although I'm sure your experience will be nothing like ours. :P

What a shame, Judy :( . Poor girl, but good for her for sticking it out  .

I've got a lovely long list of all the things suggested and have already bought some lock & lock, some Sharpies, cutlery and a couple of big tumblers :D .

I've also been eyeing up some John Lewis pots/frying pans - he's getting my old ones and I'm getting new  . (They are years old and still in good nick but I'm sure they won't be after 4 years at uni  .)

Sounds like you are all under control then :D When DD went into a house in her 2nd year we bought an enormous stainless steel casserole pot for them to do chilli/curry in if they were cooking together. That proved very useful and stood up to student life very well - she's still got it. :P Oh yes and plenty of tissues for you but you soon get over that so my friends tell me :P

I've just had a thought! My biggest expense was a frock for black tie events. I had good use out of it too, at least a couple of college/club events a term. Could you surprise him and have an early Xmas pressie of dinner jacket/suit/black tie ready for him late Nov for the round of Xmas meals? Or am I out of touch with modern student life? After all, I'm harking back to the time of gas lamps and pea-soupers

Am I imagining it or do Asda/M&S do "cheap" black tie suits?

I must be such a bad mummy. I made sure oldest son had the basic kitchen bits but apart from that I left him to it. He seemed to grow up whilst there and only stayed at home another year after uni beore he moved to another house share. I think after having his own space he'd got used to it. Hope it all goes well though.

This was pretty much my experience. I know I had bedding, towels and later some pots and pans but basically I sorted myself out with day to day necessities. I did have help getting a car and my first interview suit.

I would have loved food parcels and an Ocado delivery would have been amazing.

Not at all  . I'm probably not really helping him as he will need to grow up and manage by himself  .

I can't remember my parents giving me a single thing, They didn't even visit me once in 3 years after dropping me off - probably so glad to see the back of me! (It was only an hour away too :? .)

DS will be starting his 2nd yr in Sept/Oct and going into a shared house - I like the idea of the large saucepan for curries etc, think I will donate my massive IKEA pan to him - also the occasional shopping delivery is a great suggestion that I will use to! :D

M&S Dinner suit is about £ 150.00 - £200.00. I've had a couple of Dinner Jackets from "Charity Shops" for around

£10.00, usually loads of choice . It doesn't matter how much food/booze etc you get on it if you've paid a tenner for it. A Throw away item, a tenner for a 2nd hand jacket is cheaper than getting a jacket cleaned at the dry cleaners.

Anybody mentioned loyalty cards for supermarkets

I think you have all covered everything......... Both my DD's have said that the food parcels were the best thing we could have done for them, and the double duvet's for the single beds they had ensured that they were always warm in their very cold rooms. No computers or mobiles when they went off to uni. What an expense it must be for you all these days with no grants. I feel for you all, I really do. I'm sure that your boy will have a wonderful time ANH. Good luck with it all.

I back the idea already mentioned of the M&S dinnersuit. I bought my eldest the wahable version- it has been brilliant and has had many an outing. I think boys always seem to get good use out of black tie suits. Xmas dos, rugby club dis etc etc. Well worth the money. Cost about £140 i think but washed really well!!

Oh yes and of course they can't wear the same dress to different events

My DD has always worn short cocktail dresses to most of these events rather than full length gowns. At least she could get a bit more wear out of them when she hopefully starts work!
