tom123
Yep, you guessed it. Just been down to the field with the farmer and came face to face with some 'people' with a white truck in the corner of the field lifting a piece of farm machinery into the back. We ran over with the dogs and asked them what they were doing and after a little while managed to get it back off them and they drove away after we checked the back of the truck. I ran over to the electric fencing to check all the birds were there and the 'people' had nicked the battery and energiser which was all padlocked to a tree Now I have 32 birds to distribute between friends before school as well doing all the horses tomorrow WHY!?? Isabel
That's shocking Tom ... people just stoop so low. Will any of it be covered by insurance?
sewitall
Low lifes and plenty of other choice phrases which cannot be broadcast come to mind. Thank goodness Tom that you are OK and they didn't turn on you. You did call the police I hope. Did you manage to obtain a vehicle reg. number or any other distinguishing features that would help identify them? Thank goodness they didn't harm or steal the chickens but they may come back so be on alert.
Plum
Hope police get them Tom
Egluntyne
Oh no. That is a shame. Lets hope they are caught.
scarlettohara
'They' do it because they can and know the police won't do anything (the police are scared of them where we live). I too have horses so you get to know these people very quickly - batteries, lorry gear boxes, diesel, tack - I've seen it all
CatieB
They do it because they are less fortunate and do not have your morals
ISCA
Hearing this makes me very very very angry. Hope all is OK Tom with your animals. I hope you informed the Police. I don't care how unfortunate they may be, stealing others property is unacceptable. They could sell their (probably untaxed and uninsured) van if they need money. Grrrrr
Daphne
I'm extremely sorry to hear this Tom; it really dampens your faith in human nature. I'm sure you don't need telling but do take extra precautions now. But please do be very careful as well. I would report this to the police. Even if they aren't caught there will be a record of a crime being committed. Also, always carry your phone - to call/take pix.
The Dogmother
I am so sorry to hear that Tom, we have had a lot of similar crimes around here and the police are hot on their trail. So please make sure that the farmer reports it to the police.

Police called and given reg. and told that they would 'see what they could do!' they are scared of them around here too We have had 5 breaks ins over the past 2 years where I keep my horses but luckily nothing was taken except diesel and rugs. patsylabrador
I just want to say that I know many policemen and when they have thoughts about these people, fear isn't one of them. Just felt a bit irked!!! Wanted to stick up for the coppers I know.

Chucky1
Tom sorry to hear of you bit of bother. In answer to your question and I'm sure it is of little comfort, but there are two reasons why people steal: 1. Their ability to rationalise their behaviour. e.g. "They have plenty it won't be missed" or "I'm am owed this anyway because ...." and 2. Their perception of their chance of getting away with it. Good Luck
Plum
Terrible Egluntine. Two poultry keepers I talked to last week have had big thefts during the last year. One man had all his breeding wyandottes taken and the other lost a lot of sussex in one raid and had previously lost all her show orpingtons. Just hope they had happy homes in the end
chick wiggle
Oh Tom, im so sorry to hear this, same with Egluntynes news article. These people are the lowest of the low and there are no excuses. No matter how poor or deprived these people are it does not make this right! I really hope the police catch these 'people'
Chook n Boo Mum
Just picked this up Tom, and probably much as you'd shrug it off I'm going to send you a big {{{hug}}} I also cannot type what I think about these...........errr.......lowlifes ............why can't people just respect others lives and belongings and do the best they can with their own Do be careful Tom, especially of you are down there on your own, you cannot help any of your animals of you are hurt by these louts....always have your phone to hand and at least one other person with you please Re the police, they are only human & very often what they want to mete out to these criminals is not allowed, the same as us mere mortals Sha x
docsquid
Sorry to hear that, Tom. We've noticed a large increase in reported thefts to our rural watch co-ordinator in recent weeks, probably because the value of s"Ooops, word censored!" is going up a lot. The drain covers along the roads are going missing again (a sure sign that s"Ooops, word censored!" is of high value), and we even heard of a local tractor engine that had been removed for repair being stolen before it went back into the tractor! I suspect a lot of the farm equipment that is stolen is for its s"Ooops, word censored!" value. People who do this do seem to have a genuine belief that if people have something, they must have plenty of money, so they have a right to steal it as it won't be missed. But it is missed, and causes a huge amount of distress and difficulty.
squidsin
I guess they reason that your insurance will cover it. Ironically, I'd be very surprised if the van used to attempt to nick Tom's stuff was insured and thus traceable. Shame there are so many nasty people about - it's really upsetting and feels oddly personal when someone steals off you.
