We bought a Red Top Fly Trap

 

Cost about £8 (Including P&P) from eBay

 

Didn't smell and was full of flies after about 2 weeks Somehow 2 wasps managed to get in there too

 

My Mum's going to buy a couple more

excellent. Mine is the same with fishy cat food, chicken poo and a bit of water. They are almost full now so have two new one's ready to hang up tomorrow evening as I don't want to put my friends off their food when I have a BBQ tomorrow!

Urgh - my redtop fly trap was gross. The flys that died on the top, rather then drowning seemed to incubate rather a lot of eggs. I woke one morning to find a load a maggots in it I've had a carrier bag hung over it all week whilst waiting for rubbish collection day (today).

I'm replacing it with one of those milk bottle traps (once I've finished the milk). It does make a difference though. As we're trapless today, the flies are everywhere.

How much of a problem are these flies? I'm getting really worried now. Am I certain to get flies or is is something that comes with bigger flocks?

I have a fli trap and a plastic bag one as described. I have issues with the flip top people as I only got one bag of poison and should have had 2. 3 phone calls and 1 email and no joy. Customer care stinks - I wont buy another from them on principle. But they are good - we also have a couple of wasps in ours too. YS most impressed

Ive just ordered myself a red top flytrap and am now wondering wether i should actually use it or not. Does the effect outweigh the smell? or should i not have bothered?

Im planning on putting it quite a long way from where we sit but i will still have to walk close to it when going to the WIR

I had two red top fly traps. They were both brimming with dead flies at the bottom and a good inch and a half of alive but dying flies at the top, and the smell were unlike anything bad I have ever smelt in my life. You are supposed to flush the flies down the loo and reuse the bags with the spare 'bait' that comes with it, but I couldn't face it. Bin day tomorrow and the smell is VILE! I hope they take the bag I have no idea how to tackle the fly issue, but I got to do something, hence opening this post in excitement for some fly ideas!

i got a bit of a bargin today in the pound shop fly traps that you hang up and put juice or meat in (the type that they can fly in but cant get out )2 in a box for a quid im well impressed with them hung one up at about 6pm and already have flys in it

 

i will be picking a few move up next time i go in as they say washable but i wont be able to do it lol

Well the guy from Fli trap called - very apologetic and OH was "oh yes its brill excellent product" I nearly took his ahnd off trying to get the phone. It appears cos of tax they are stingy and only include 1 bag of bait. Might try the blood fish and bone as suggested on here. This forum is bad for me - i keep buying things suggested on here. Do not I repeat not post goodies for me to buy - unfortunately they have all been great which means when some one suggests summat else I just have to have it.

I had to empty it as I saw a few maggots - these freaked me out. When I took the top off it wasnt the smell which made me gag but the bluebottles crawling about. OH tipped bleach on the now ordered some refills - didnt think about maggots till I read it on forum somewhere. Gross

I got the ones that go on top of a plastic milk bottle - the kit is £5 in B&Q and is the top thing and a tube of bait which you empty in to an old plastic milk bottle

 

It seems to be working well so far

 

When its full you take the top off and replace the original milk bottle top and place the bottle in the bin

 

You can re-use the top with your own bait

*sigh* I have never had a fly problem until this year - now every time I go up to the WIR the floor is covered with flies who rise up, circle round and then settle again. I raked out some of the woodchip and replaced it with more aubiose, I hosed it down last week - next plan is to try and dig some of the (earth) floor over and dig some garden lime in, however I know it's going to be like digging concrete.

 

I was thinking of a fly trap but on reading the above, I am not sure I can face it - they're annoying but at least it doesn't smell at the moment!

it took ages to rid the smell off my hands even after 4 washes and handcream and I wore gloves. To cap it all it caused a row between me and OH as the carrier bag leaked and stank out the dustbin so because he was grumbling soo much I emptied it bleached it and put the offending thing in an old ice cream tub. I was mega stressed - all this for a load of flies. gross

We have 3 lots of staggered Red Top on the go and I hose down the grass and patio about 3 or 4 times to keep them away. The curry ones are the worst for attracting, the others just dry up quickly. The first one pongs but the other two have a way to go yet. The maggots soon die too so I just leave it to fill up. I do like the DIY job though!

 

Just a thought, the wasps have been having a field day around the poo on the grass because they are catching loads of flies (bless their little cotton socks) for their own babies, so perhaps they thought they were onto a good thing with all the flies in the trap. I don't mind wasps at this time of year - they are quite smart and rid the garden of loads of pests - it's when they get drunk on cider in late summer when the trouble starts.
