Bumper bits - a warning. PLEASE PLEASE READ

Recommended Posts

My girls were happily rooting around in the bushes in our garden this afternoon when I heard the most terrible cry of pain, I ran into the garden to find Roxy standing there with her bumper bit literally hanging off her beak - when I looked closer, her beak was hanging off too.... It seems she'd caught the bit in the undergrowth and somehow pulled it so hard she broke her beak. The blood was pouring out of her and she was in pain and shock, as was I.

I collected her up in a blanket and rushed her to the vet. They gave her gas and removed the bit and tried to glue the top of her beak back on, until tomorrow when she's hopefully going to have some sort of reconstruction.

I am utterly devastated. It's our fault - we put the bit on her and now she's upstairs in a box where we're trying to keep her quiet in a dark room and I don't know if she'll make it through the night. I'm in tears as I write this.

She's my favourite, I know you're not supposed to have them but she is. If anything happens to her I'll never forgive myself. I know, with the best will in the world, people will say 'it's only a chicken', but I love her to bits and know you'll all understand. So please please be careful with bumper bits, I would hate anyone else to have to go through how I feel now.

Thank you all so much for your replies, it's so kind and really helps.

My little fighter made it through the night and because we had her in a blacked out room, she slept until we took her to the vets at 8am. Despite her horrific injuries she was still her perky self, bless her, and managed to eat some sweetcorn we chopped up into tiny pieces.

She's at the vets as we speak, they're going to take a proper look at her and see if anything can be done to save her.

I'll keep you posted.
