feemcg
Browsing Adtrader tonight and the first ad in the livestock section for my postcode says - Large Walled Garden, ideal for productive garden, keeping pigs etc. Free. So just phoned the chap, bit of a grump but keeps chickens himself. The area has some raised beds (which I'm not really interested in) and he wants it kept tidy but doesn't mind the idea of a couple of chicken houses and runs ("but he doesn't want dozens of children or dogs running about" ). So going to see it tomorrow night to see if it suits my expanding chicken 'habit'. We're a bit wary, as we might do all the donkey (now theres an idea!) work, if its in need of a big tidy up, then he says he's selling up or something. Need to find out all the 'ins and outs'. Its about 15 mins fom my house, near Lanark in the Clyde Valley which is very pretty. What do you think, chickens or pigs, or both ?
The Dogmother
All of the above Fee (sorry, not much help there) Sounds fabulous though

red
Sounds great but your right to look into it a bit just in case he wants you to tidy it up for him
AnnieP
Sounds too good to be true Fee! How wonderful!
Egluntyne
Perhaps you ought to formalise the arrangement so that he doesn't turf you out when you have put in loads of work. Sounds an exciting opportunity otherwise.
Lesley
If you have pigs, they will do all the work and then you wouln't feel quite so bad if he wanted the land back and you would have something big in return for your investment.
hillfamily
Sounds exciting ............especially if you can agree that he doesn't just want someone to clear the ground. Now what could you put in the walled garden.......................a sheep or 2, a dexter, little piggies, lots of chooks, banties, some Indian runner ducks, a horse, a donkey..........................oops got a bit carried away
feemcg
My minds been working overtime too! Obviously its a much bigger commitment as I can't just ask the girl across the road to pop over and feed the chickens while I'm on holiday - I might not be able to take a holiday! Maybe the grumpy old guy would do it for me! I'd definitely like ducks, and everything would need to be very secure if I wasn't there all the time, Anyway, I'm getting carried away and I've not seen it yet. Will keep you posted. Jools
BIG WOW!!! That sounds amazing. I'd be snapping his hand off. Oh, and getting that formal agreement just in case. Please keep us posted. You can start a diary on here, like Lesley, to keep us up to date with all your news. Now I sound like you've already moved it
feemcg
Well thats that - told you he was a grumpy old git! Phoned up to confirm time we were going tonight and he says he's changed his mind and doesn't want anyone keeping chickens there - so why did he put an ad in adtrader then, and why did I have a lengthy conversation with him last night about my plans then told me to come and see it!? I reckon he's let his walled garden get into a right state and wants more of a gardening type to come in and sort it all out for him. Ah well, it would make more sense to have land next to my house I suppose. " Whits fur ye ull no go by ye " - as they say round these parts! theherd123
Oh Fee what a disappointment but i suppose its better you found out now and not when you have nearly broken your back doing all the work! How horrible of him!

ubereglu
That's really bad of him. Mind you if he's as bad as you say perhaps you're better off without him.
Popcorn
I was just about to say that Liz. Sounds like a lucky escape Fee. You might well have got things up and running and he could quite easily have shouted... "Gerrof my land!!" Then you'd be up the proverbial creak without a paddle and a menagerie- so to speak Sounds like a fab idea though. Such a shame he was a grump. Humph
Laura & CTB
["Gerrof my land!!" Yep - we had someone say that to us COMPLETE WITH SHOTGUN!!!)
feemcg
Yep, lucky escape I think. He seemed quite miffed when I told him I had hatched some Cream Legbars and snapped "where did you get your eggs? I thought I was the only one round here with Cream Legbars" .
