I took my boys to the vets the other week for their annual boosters.....Håkan had been done and dealt with and she then moved on to Ludwig.....she decided to weigh him first, so I hauled him up and carried him through to the scales.....put him on....she said "no, that can't be right, just lift him off", tapped the scales, reset them and then told me to put him back on, which I did.....she tutted and we went back through to the treatment room....she told me he was a overweight and that if he doesn't lose weight she would refer him to their Fat Club for Cats....I laughed, thinking she was joking, she didn't look impressed, and I asked if they really had a Fat Club for Cats, to which she answered yes, they run a weigh"Ooops, word censored!"chers club for pets...I asked what it entailed, if he had to come each week and be weighed in public whilst the other cats all sniggered at him behind their paws....I don't think she had a sense of humour.....

 

Anyway, he is now on light biscuits, and is only substituting his new regime with the occasional mouse (nearly put moose there!!).....he is none too impressed, he says he's all muscle and is just big boned. I made the mistake of telling him that if he were a maine coone, he'd be underweight at 7.4kg, and now he's convinced that he has maine coone in his blood. He is part bengal so they are big cats anyway, anybody who meets Ludwig is amazed by how long he is, and he's quite tall, but the belly hanging down to the ground is not such a good look!

The last time I was at the vets, there was a black labrador looking very unhappy, the vet commented on this and I said that it was down to the indignity of having to be weighed in the waiting room where EVERY cat, dog and budgie can see. I mean, I really think it's time they did that sort of thing in the privacy of the consulting room!!!???

Indeed.....he was shouting loud and clear "if you won't feed me, I'll find my own food"....but I suppose he did get exercise in the hunt....

Sophie (cat) and I were most put-out a couple of years ago to be told that she was *whispers* overweight - the cheek of it. She is also of course big boned. I think it doesn't help with her that for some reason after the female cats are neutered at my vets they end up with a big swinging pouch hanging down below. That just adds to illusion of fatness I think.

 

Rather luckily for the dogs the weighing machine is out of the way of prying eyes.

I to admit tubby Puddy has been going to the local tubby tabby club for about eighteen months now . She has gone from 7.4kg to 4.7kg in that time, due to a diet of obesity cat food in very tiny quantities. It was never a case of how much she ate, so much as how much she didn't move and she is quite a small-built cat (no chance of her supplementing her own diet unless a mouse throws itself into her mouth and even then she'd probably want someone else to do most of the chewing ). Having said that, they reckoned Loki was borderline @ 4.5kg and he's as skinny as a whippet - and regularly brings me a mouse (or bits) to share .

 

At least the weighing is done in private (no sniggering behind paws), and Pud now walks out of her basket and plonks herself on the scales all by herself - anything for the chance of a cat treat!

Tubby Puddy's idea of exercise is to walk from her bed to her feeding bowl and back again - and that's only because the human slave won't bring the bowl to her (just can't get the staff these days!). Ongoing carefully-measured amounts of diet cat food is the only way ...

I've just started getting cat food from zooplus.co.uk they do a great range of higher quality cat food including a brand from Sweden that includes a moose flavoured one (in tetrapaks of course!!) .

 

Seriously though, the Swedish one (Bozita) is really good it is not too different from supermarket cat food in price but much much better ingredients, with no cereals which I think makes cats put on weight. The protein content is really high so it is like an Atkins diet for cats. Since I have put my moggies on this better cat food, they have lost all the fat they were carrying and got lovely shiny coats without having to go hungry so, you might like to check it out.

Theres a Fat Club at the vets, for cats + dogs

 

One of the vet nurses runs it and they get loads of people wanting to go!

Weigh them, get advice, can order in foods if they need them etc...

Thanks for the recommendation, I've ordered some Bozita and wil let you know know how the furry horde get on with it. I'd just got a whole load of cat food from Tesco though, using their clubcard vouchers, so they'll have to eat that up as well as tubby Pud finishing her diet cat food . Puddy is getting close to her target weight and it would be good to find her something decent to eat that doesn't just pile the pounds back on, so Bozita may be just the thing .

I forgot to add Honeys prob is lack of movement. The odd occasion she shoots across the lawn has humans open mouthed. The other day she scared a friends toddler by streaking over lawn - poor kid was terrified - her mum said "shes hates animals moving suddenly" - we both fell about laughing as it is so rare. In her defence Honey has said its her metaboilism which is slow that and the catopause ( equiv of menopause)

Aha....the catopause....now I think about it the boys are approaching middle age so it could be that....

I've just come back (from treating myself to a Miele Cat and Dog cylinder vac) and found 3 piles of innards on the floor so think he may be supplementing his diet.....

 

Both boys are very worried that I've bought a vacuum cleaner which is designed to suck up cats and dogs....the old one was already considered to be a bit of a monster so this is just the final straw....but Ludwig inspected the hose, then patted his paunch and decided he's probably safe....

The Bozita arrived and has not been well-received .

 

Initially they fell on it like they hadn't seen food in days, but now they turn their little noses up at . It's probably the equivalent of trying to move small children from a diet of burgers and chips to one of proper food, and I will be persisting, but this morning all three of the non-dieting cats went out with little or no breakfast eaten. I'm alternating with the supermarket stuff, as I'd already bought a whole lot of that and it must be eaten up and not wasted, but I was really hoping they'd like the decent food - little monsters!

 

On the positive side, the hens are happy as they get the leftovers !
