On the plus side OH has spent the morning in the kitchen making mince pies and latte biscuits, lovely smells. I have been ironing to keep warm. Over a foot of snow, my brother came back from uni in Cardiff yesterday and he said it was really bad there, I think he chose the right time to come back! Valkyrie Posted December 18, 2010 Share Posted December 18, 2010 A friend up the road in Farnborough reckons she has a foot of snow. Methinks 5/6 inches at the most. We had a fair amount of rain and some hail with a little flurry of snow on Thursday when the Rotary Santa came round to collect and it looked quite festive, but left virtually nothing by morning. A cousin said they had more in Basingstoke because it settled there - probably an inch at the most. Nothing yesterday at all and OH went to Te$co's early this morning and said it looked iffy, but when he came home it fell down. I reckon we had about half an inch and then it started up again so possibly ended up with an inch plus a bit. Fed up with snow. keyhole kate Posted December 18, 2010 Share Posted December 18, 2010 Brrr It snowed about 2" inches here yesterday and got down to -12 here last night between 9.30pm and 1.30 pm when we went out twice to collect DD2 and DD3 respectively. Even worse today we have had at least another six inches of of snow today OH and I had to cobble together some vinyl shower curtains oddments of plastic sheeting to protect the girls from the worst of the wind and snow that was blowing into there WIR (haven't sourced some tarps yet) they looked so miserable huddled together however OH picked up one of the girls and declared she was as warm as toast one and silkie had given up by 3.00pm and gone back into the cube who says there not smart Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Lesley Posted December 18, 2010 Share Posted December 18, 2010 Inconsiderate!! We set of at 8am for the market - a smattering of snow and clear, gritted, roads. While we were all in the cafe the snow was steadily falling and settling. Clare and Moochoo left early and both struggled with getting home. Sunrising Hill on the main Stratford to Banbury road was closed so Clare had a detour to get back. We left about an hour later and also struggled to travel the 7 miles - the once clear roads had 3" of snow settled on them. We've had another 3" quite quickly after we got back. Lauren was out on a small sledge - complete with her wrist in a splint, I just tried not to look , hoping we didn't have to try to get to Warwick hospital again through the snow The dogs love it! It was about as acurate as i can ever remember. The Dogmother Posted December 18, 2010 Share Posted December 18, 2010 Had a pretty dramatic day really - no snow overnight, Phones Lesley in the morning to check on the snow near Stratford as it's always different the other side of Sunrising Hill/Edge Hill, all fine, so set off for the market to collect the dog meat. Phil called at about 10am to say that it was snowing like mad (not quite the word he used ) at home so I set off back. It steadily got worse as I got nearer home, Sunrising Hill - massively steep hill - had just been closed by the police despite being gritted earlier so I turned round and came back through the villages and out onto a main road. It was quite an adrenaline rush as the windscreen wipers kept freezing up with enormous lumps of ice on them and it was a white-out, so I had to stop every now and then to knock it off. Some eejit behind me in a BMW coupe kept trying to overtake - impossible to go over 30 mph - but his back end was fishtailing like mad each time he tried, so I jammed the hazards on to try and make him see sense. Eventually got back after a (normally) 30 minute journey took me over an hour and a half! I really don't mind driving in the snow or bad weather and consider myself a competent driver (used to drive through the Alps on snow chains) but this was quite dramatic. 7" and counting here at the moment with some pretty high drifts against the back gate and in the side alley. Central Banbury is deserted so I donned my YakTrax and took the shopping trolley down to stock up on a few things at M&S. Blooming hard work struggling back up the hill though! I'm a bit miffed though as I've not had a call or anything to let me know they weren't going to get here (which I can understand) and if I had chosen to go out no doubt they would have turned up. They probably have deliveries as a priority, and I can understand them wanting to get those out to people, but it would have been nice to know! Hence I was rushing around like a mad woman in the garden once the delivery time had passed, clearing the paths and getting the snow off the WIR. I also had to dig out the front path as the gate wouldn't move all that snow. I've swept all the snow off the car with a very soft nylon broom, as the local children were hacking at snow covered cars with a plastic shovel, they didn't appreciate me moving the snow off mine, tough! It hasn't been this bad for over 16 years. I'm going to see if I can sort the footpath out in front of the house tomorrow, and see if my elderly neighbours want their front path cleared.
