Chortle Chook Posted January 12, 2011 Share Posted January 12, 2011 (edited) I have 3 little Silkie hens, a little Silkie cockerel and 2 little Frizzles and I love them loads. All the same, as Morehens disease strikes, I can't help but make up a list of breeds I'd one day love to have. What would be on your list? On mine I have: Barnvelder for their pretty laced feathering and big softy personality Dorking - apparently they scratch rather less than some other breeds, while still looking like real famyard chooks. Also, according to my book, they don't often go broody Scots Dumpy - I just love their little short legs and I think they would be hardy girls. I also love their pretty cuckoo markings Thuringian - for their docile nature and lovely mottled feathers, though apparently they are rather rare. Vikinghen- I like the idea of having a hen that came over with the Vikings and I have read that they make exceptionally good pets and come in lots of different colours, but again apparently they are rare. One of each of these would be just great. I'd also have a couple of ex-bats as I am a rescuing sort (I have ex-racer greyhounds) and would love to see them recovering and having happy times after their mass production lives. Redwing Posted January 12, 2011 Share Posted January 12, 2011 I love the silver laced barnvelders - they are awesome I've had Thuringians and they were super, really chatty and friendly, I'd highly recommend them There has been much debate about the Vikinghen and its generally thought that they arent very consistent and vary enormously so there is debate about whether it really could be classed as a breed What would be on my list?? Falkor Posted January 12, 2011 Share Posted January 12, 2011 Modern Game - blue and blue duckwing Indian Game - I have dark bantams atm but would love Jubilee and Blue Laced - LF and Bantam Malay - LF - **Flutters eyes at Larmurf** Anyone else spot a theme here!? There were some Silver Laced Barnvelders at the P'boro show in the sale section earlier this year with really clear markings and great form, they were gorgeous. Chortle Chook Posted January 12, 2011 Author Share Posted January 12, 2011 Oh dear oh dear, how will I resist if I see a Silver laced Barnvelder or a Thuringian for sale any time I can see my flock expanding despite myself. There is a lady right near to me who breeds naked necks (and Frizzles and Polands and Dutch hens). I got my white Frizzle from her and while I was there one of her little naked necks flew up onto my shoulder for all the world like a tiny vulture. I'd never seen one and it gave me quite a start but it was such a dear, friendly little bird that I was quite won round. She had loads. goodinparts Posted January 12, 2011 Share Posted January 12, 2011 With a whole new cube to fill, I'm always fiddling around with my chicken wish-list at the moment...I think it looks something like this I've always wanted a Salmon Faverolle and either a buff or speckeld Sussex to join my hybrids in the The plan for the is then for bantams - a couple of Pekins (MUST have a partridge Pekin....long for one sooo) and one Frizzle, maybe a couple of Wyandottes or a bantam Orpington or a Sussex or.... I am still 'not allowed' more chickens but I would like a Speckled Sussex and a Scots Grey and a Wyandotte and a something that lays pretty blue or green eggs next. All my girls have been hybrids so far and I think I would like pure breeds instead. I'd like to go back to Temple Newsam and get some eggs to hatch this spring, if I can sneak them under a broody girl while the OH isn't looking ! The trouble is my girls are rubbish at going broody.
