I quite fancy some Langshans if I can find some really plummy pink layers

 

and of course my Higgledy Harriet Hens for speckled eggs.

I just googled naked necks because I've never actually heard of them.

They look so creepy!! I'd much rather have a good looking silver laced wyandotte

photo's don't do naked necks justice Boris is a big brute but he's as soft as a bottle of pop. he's certainly not creepy hansome yes

Next for spring/summer we hope to get 3 or 4 of the following :

Double laced barnevelder

Copper blue maran

and an Araucana

Fenton blue

Speckledy

Gold laced wyandotte

 

Unless I can persuade my partner to get all of them which will never happen......

 

Has anyone heard of Shamo chickens??

They're really beautiful. So gentlemanly! If I had more space

I would go searching for them but they look like they like to run...a lot

Shamos are amazing to look at and do need space but they also need armed guards.... or your other chooks would anyway. They are real fighters and even young chicks have been known to fight and need separating!

I have a Scots Grey already

What is the difference between a Scots Grey and a Scots Dumpy other than the length of the legs? I read in a mag. recently that about 50% of Scots Dumpies hatch with long (actually more like normal sized) legs. Are those Scots Greys?

 

Re the Naked Necks - I can't quite get around the urge to provide them with a scarf but I will say that those I have seen have the sweetest of teperaments. Early on this thread I said they were a bit like mini vultures but actually mini turkeys would probably be closer. The lady I know who has them, aslo has 3 huge bronze turkeys (as pets - they survived Crimbo) and the the naked necks look rather cute with these

 

Last question - how would I go about getting the rarer breeds e.g.Thuringian? What Redwing has said about hers makes me want one more than ever.

Scots greys and Scots Dumpies are different

 

Long legged Scots Dumpies are usually just sold on to be pets

 

Thuringians are quite rare, I know of a couple of breeders but one is miles away and the other in Essex I think

 

Reading bantam show is on at the end of feb and they have sales pens so you might get some luck there, its actually in Newbury not far from the A34/M4 interchange

 

Its also worth getting hold of the Rare Breeds Poultry Society and asking if they have a list of breeders. Most breeders will show their birds so may be at the Reading show and often will bring birds for you to buy if you ask nicely

Speckled Sussex is DS2s wish list. He never got over the pretty bird eating out of his hand at TN. I wont tell him you ATE his favourite chicken though! His school has hatched Welsummers this year too & they're lovely.

Well my shortlist is much simpler. I'd just love some more ex batts to nurture & maybe a couple of reliable egg layers, then I would focus on bantams, lots more bantams

I'm fortunate enough to have had lots of different breeds, have hatched them all myself, but the one chicken I would like to have is a Salmon Faverolles. The first one I hatched was tragically killed by one of my dogs when she was 12 weeks old She's the only chicken I've ever lost to my dogs The other one I hatched prolapsed with her first egg and I sadly lost her too They are such sweet, gentle, friendly little people and I'd love another but I'm worried I'm cursed so I haven't hatched any since.

id love to get a buff columbine wyandotte but there is no more chickens for me yet for a long time till i sell my house and know what im doing and where im going.

Lewis has a buff columbian pekin and I like that too, however my wyandotte is so sweet and pretty I would like another one - they are lovely bantams

I'm hoping my Silver Laced Wyandotte gets more docile when she comes into lay. At the moment she will follow my Gold Laced Wyandotte cockerel around, and if i go to pick her up, i get attacked by my boy, and she flys away.

I thought I had everything I wanted ( how silly is that ?) but on my list I now have buff and speckled Sussex, I love the colour of the New hampshire Red ,maybe a something laced Wyandotte , possibly a naked neck and a large fowl Silkie would be nice. I only have room for 3 more hens and I plan to hatch some homegrown bitzas under Muppet this year, so think my wish list will have to stay a wish.
