Travelling home after a long day at the surgery in the dark yesterday when I spotted a woman on the side of the road. I dont know why but I felt she was going to do something silly and next thing she ran across in front of my car with inches to spare. I think she was running for a bus. I stopped very suddenly without skidding thankfully and the driver behind who wasnt on my bumper (they normally are round here) stopped too. The car stalled - I opened the window to give her a piece of my mind but she;d gone. Stupid stupid woman - she could have killed herself and caused a pile up. I was shaking like a leaf and couldnt help thinking of what if I'd killed her or maimed her. OH gave me a stiff drink - he decided wine was preferable to hot sweet tea. I have never killed anyone (to my knowledge) I dont want to start now. Why do people do this? She'll be waiting for buses in heaven if she carries on like that.

lucky you had that moment of intuition - much the same thing happened to me - group of young lads on pushbikes on the pavement, suddenly just lurched off on to the road in front of me - if I hadn't had that feeling at least three of them would have been under my wheels... another time a group of women and toddlers stood outside a church hall - sure enough, one of the toddlers suddenly pulled away from his mother and dashed in to the road :o I think this is why kiddy reins were invented :)

hope you're over the shock now?

Sounds like a narrow escape, no wonder you were shaking.

But think about this, maybe she wasn't really there, maybe she was a ghostly apparition ........ Yep, I watch too many films. 1.gif:roll:

Ha ha Clootie, you said exactly what I thought!

Thankfully you were paying attention Alis girls, what an awful & stupid thing for the woman to do, I hope that you feel better today and can let the incident go, rather than worrying yourself sick about what could have happened as I would have done in the past

Sounds like you had a narrow escape.

There is a primary school at the end of my road and it is always difficult getting out in the morning. The other day some stupid woman, who obviously couldn't be bothered to walk a few further steps, had parked immediately opposite the junction, and then opened her car door without looking. I was pulling out of my road and I honestly dont know how I missed her. Such a near accident and so easily avoided. I was shaking afterwards and had to stop further down the road and calm down. I think some people are just so wrapped up in their own little world sometimes.

Now I am spooked - I will be seeing if theres been any deaths on this patch of road. She wasnt English so should be easy to find out - Oriental appearance as I saw her closely in headlights. She disappeared so quickly could have been a phantom. :anxious: There is a road in the East Midlands where dad lives which is said to be haunted by someone who was run over. It goes chilly on summer evenings when you drive thro it. :anxious::anxious: Gibber gibber

It's called paying attention. It's a rare skill, I'll grant you, but you're obviously relieved to be one of the few who practice it.

That's the thing with accidents. We all make mistakes from time to time on the road, but usually get away with it because of someone else making allowance for these little imperfections. The accidents (usually) happen when a mistake by one coincides with another cutting tolerances too fine, so making no allowance. You, obviously, were the right person to be in that spot at that time. Well done, and I wish there were more like you.

And no, I'm not being flippant.

Glad you are OK, Alis girls!

Driving to work on Tuesday morning (I leave for work at 7am so it was pitch black) I encountered a cyclist wearing dark colours with a bag over his back light so I didn't see him as I approached, he showed up in street lights as he passed some shops. As I spotted him and went to overtake, I noticed a funny shape in the beam of the car headlights coming the other way, but some distance away. It was a small dark coloured Peugeot with no lights

In Birmingham, people regularly step out into the road without looking, as if they won't get hurt and will be around to sue the driver for loads of money  My mum tells me that when using a local zebra crossing, motorists will cross over into the other lane to avoid stopping, when she is actually on the crossing

Hope you are over the shock now Alis Girls.

I had an upsetting incident on the way home tonight. I was driving on a dual carriageway, in the nearside lane. There was plenty of space between me and the car in front. A car drove along beside me for 20 seconds or so, I got the impression that they wanted to move into the lane I was in, but they weren't indicating and didn't speed up to get in front of me. I'm sure the driver was aware that I was there. Then the driver went as if to move into my lane, into my car! I had to brake and swerve. They just continued. I have a funny feeling they did it on purpose though. Which is what most shocked and upset me.

It's difficult to get it out of your mind isn't it.

OH told me that today he saw a car pull away from a red light (driver must not have been concentrating) into a stream of traffic coming off the motorway. No one was hurt thankfully.

M602 was completely closed westbound tonight. I don't know what had happened there.

Much better thanks - just goes to show how many daft people there are on the roads and pavements :anxious: The local high school which ES attends seems to have a prob with kids playing "chicken". These are 11yrs and older but they are still stupid. Yesterday a silly lad walked in front of me - to say the air was bleu and I gave him the full blast of my horn. If I could have stopped and given him the benefit of my mind I would - I had my youngest with me and he was shocked. Next time I will pull over and get it off my chest as its not fair as a careful motorist that I and others should be put thro this. At this rate I'll be marched off to the funny farm by men in white coats  RHC hope you are ok - I hate motorway driving.

I've had two similar incidents, both in my last car - an enormous bright emerald green Berlingo the size of a garden shed! Both times i tooted them and on each occasion they turned into and damaged my van  one of these was a van full of lads, obviously intent on running me off the (deserted) road. Luckily I got photos of the vehicles in both incidents and the police caught up with both sets of drivers when i pursued it.

Eejits!

Fairly uneventful drive today! Thanks, I'm OK today. I have moved on, can't dwell on these things. I drive from Liverpool to Manchester, and back, everyday for work. The M62 is a nightmare!

Claret it did cross my mind that if I'd had an on board video camera I could have captured the incident. I wish I did sometimes because it would be helpful to have another person's perspective on some incidents.

I have had some odd dreams since and ached all over yesterday. The drivers and pedestrians round this area are a nightmare. I think I with get a cross to put in my car for added protection from above. I can see why people drive with rosary beads in their cars. Divine intervention and a car video - now where do I get one of those?
