Insurance claim invalidated - *2nd update*

Recommended Posts

The second loss adjuster has just left.

She didn't go up on the roof ('elf 'n' safety . How come the other guy went up there, then?)

Apparently there wasn't a storm that night  . Direct Line use data from the weather station which is 6 miles from my house and because it recorded gusts of "only" 53mph, that doesn't constitute a storm and hence our roof wasn't damaged by a storm. Silly me, I must have forgotten I climbed on the roof and ripped it off with my bare hands.

Unbelievable  .

Chickendoodle, this matches exactly what you were saying about local weather conditions. I'm trying to get hold of someone at the Ski Centre to see if they have wind gust data for that night.

She did offer a cash settlement for the internal redecoration which is something I suppose. After the excess it'll be about £375  .

What I don't understand is why the 2 loss adjuster firms used totally different criteria to reach the same conclusion :? . The first said it was the condition of the roof (no mention of wind speed). The second says wind speed. Also, the first firm didn't offer a cash payout - he said the WHOLE claim was invalid. The woman today said that as the rainfall was a certain amount that night, we are covered.

I'm still going to contest this and at the very least will be moving all my insurance from Direct Line.

:dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance:

Just had a call from the loss adjuster who has spoken to her manager, explained the situation (and the particular location of my house) and I've to submit an estimate for the roof :D .

Not celebrating quite yet until I get the payment :anxious: . (Well, maybe a bit, I've got a big grin on my face  )

Just shows, nothing ventured, nothing gained :D .

Well done. We have such trouble here helping our clients with some of the storm claims - as you know (and have experienced) there can be strong gusts of wind that are completely local and therefore unrecorded at the weather station. This is always much more exaggerated in coastal areas. It is so frustrating but unfortunately there is a standard insurance industry definition of a storm and if you don't meet it on paper - tough - computer says no!

Worth noting for the future anyone reading this - if you have a freakish storm and are likely to be putting in an insurance claim trawl the internet and the local papers the following day for anything that will support you.

That's great news ANH. :D

Incidentally, my neighbours sprang a leak in the thick snow that we had - the tiny flat roof over the bay window in their bedroom started to leak, fetching down part of the ceiling in that room. At first their claim was denied, but they appealed and it has now been allowed. Perhaps the insurance companies are clamping down with all the adverse weather we've had recently.

Good news ANH - here's hoping you get a cheque soon!

As an aside, I have sometimes found Direct Line to be cheaper, and to be fair when I had a claim with them, they were very efficient. A colleague stopped using them however, when they declined to offer insurance to his wife despite her 20-year record of driving with no claims. The reason? Her car was adapted so she could safely drive it despite her disability ...

 Sorry to to hijack this thread but having a disability this kind of thing makes me incensed :

If Direct Line actually gave this as a reason to deny cover this amounts to Direct Disability Discrimination :x:x:x

And I would have have reported them to the Disability Right Commision quick smart who would most likely taken up a case against them :x when I was researching Disability Discrimination some years ago I was agog at some of the cases publicised on the DRC website that they had championed :) Sorry steps down off soap box

Keep figting the good fight ANH

A little bit of good news today :D . Received a cheque from Direct Line for £524  . Was slightly worried that that was all I was getting (the roof repair was £1250 :? ) so I phoned them. The roof claim is still being considered so keep all your fingers crossed for me  . This money is for the redecoration, which had been OK'd by the assessor already (but is more than she said it would be 8) ).

On the plus side, my bathroom looks absolutely fab now 8) . I've gone to town replacing everything so the insurance has really only covered the redecoration but it was long overdue!
