Oh Em, dont they look lovely, and all that lovely lush green grass, where'd you get that from then?

I make sure they are standing on the good bits when I have the camera. It is patchy around the edges trust me!!

Tetty and her friend, Little Hen, have moved out of the hospital wing and are outside in a sheltered run as of today. Just need some sunshine now!

Hens still available for rehoming from us in Brackley (Northants) and St Neots (Cambs) next weekend, 27th March. Please email me on emma.palmer@bhwt.org.uk for more information.

Thanks

Em

Good luck with it, Em. I'm having a knee operation soon, so OH will be doing chicken duty, otherwise I'd be back for more.

I have 4 out of the original 7 left. All are fully feathered and they each lay an egg every day. They're loving the sun and are my most intrepid explorers. Too intrepid at times! I have one houdini who I keep finding in the veg patch and although I've watched her, I haven't the faintest clue as to how she's getting out!

I didn't really do anything special for my ex batts when I got them (apart from spoiling them with love!).

Several food and water stations are a good idea as they can squabble over food and water. Make sure you have mash/ex batt crumb to start with instead of pellets - you can switch them later. Be ready to put them to bed for the first few nights... and take them out again in the morning, and also be ready to collect the eggs from wherever they decide to pop them out!

Other than that, really just give them lots of time to adjust. They will be frightened of their own shadow at first so I tried not to keep bothering them in the early days until they had settled into their new surroundings. Anything else you will work out as you go along. They're not that different really, and most are tougher than they look!

Thanks for the information, I have bought another type of feeder as Em said they don't like the grub feeder initially. We will get some ex batt food when we collect them but will get some mash tomorrow just in case they run of the ex batts food.

It will be an emotional day on Sunday as I lived in Brackley from about 10 until I left home and my mum and dad stayed in the house until they died a few years ago. I have not really been back since then other than round the bypass.

As soon as I heard of people rehoming chickens in Brackley I knew that was where I had to get some from.

Tomorrow I am setting up their new temporary home, they are going in the (purple eglu) it has an extended run but I am wondering if it would be better to let them have the normal size run to start with, any thoughts?

Thanks.

Chrissie

3 sleeps to go :D:D

I am getting rather eggcited but also rather nervous at the prospect of three new girls that will be in need of special care.

Any advice about what I need to do differently for these compared to other chickens would be great.

Chrissie

Have you had this months BHWT newsletter ? There is some great advice in there and a free booklet to send for :D If you haven't let me know and I will post a link :D

Hi All

Sorry for the delay in updating this thread but I have only just caught up with myself after a very chickeny few days :D .

Sunday was another great suscess! More hens from the farm than we were allocated but we made a few calls and everybody got rehomed!

The weather was lovely as were the hens, really quite relaxed considering their eventful morning coming out of their cages and making their way to the yard in Brackley. In fact, I think some of the rehomers and us volunteers were more stressy than most of the hens :lol:

As always there were a few hens that did not get rehomed on the day and came home with Dappy Chick (Anna) and myself.

I came home with the SAS girls - Andi and McNabb. Named the SAS girls by Anna's OH as they were a dirty and looked like they were in Camo. They had a nice bath last night and are nice and clean but I think the names are sticking. I also brought home a limper (currently called......Limper) and a little hen that was perfectly featherd from her head back to about half was along her body and then she is completely bald. She is also a little on the skinny side so Half-A-Hen as she has been called is with me to re-feather and bulk up a bit. She is a real sweety and takes extreme pleasure in jumping onto my lap when i go into their run. Although it did mean I had to change before I came to work today

My other Exbatts are doing well and laying so many eggs it is mad!!! Tetty, from the last rescue is getting better and is another sweety pie :D

We will be having a another rescue soon and I will post on here as soon as the date is confirmed. However is you are interested in rehoming exbatts anywhere in the UK please check out www.bhwt.org.uk for a list of rehoming sites and dates :D If your area does not have a confirmed date you can still register your interest and be added to the waiting list and you will be contact when hens are available! :D
