Jill
Snowy I think you could be right. I wonder if she has been holding onto the egg for a while. Hopefully all will be well now.
The Dogmother
Here's our little 'Malteser egg', pictured alongside some regular bantam eggs of about 38g: It weighed just 5g. I cracked it - the shell was rather soft and the membrane was extra tough. Inside was about enough very gelatinous white to coever a 2 pence piece and a thing like a tiny grape seed. I reckon that something got into her egg-making tackle and she formed an egg round it. Perhaps it's a bit of tissue I'm not sure, but it might be Betty's

AmandaR
There must be something in the air today as we too received an unusually small egg from one of our chooks this morning. Edit: Yesterday morning even!!

SarahJo
Laura .. yours is a perfect example of a "wind egg" - which are always v. small and don't have yolks. The other egg also looked to me like it was covered with dried blood. .
Nicola H
Well it must be the week for strange eggs I have just found this in the nesting box.................. The egg on the left is a normal sized one from Ginger I am not sure who layed the egg on the right but it looks like it could be Babs she hasn't layed an egg for over a year................... braden01
it looks like it could be Babs she hasn't layed an egg for over a year................... I didn't know that hens could stop laying for any length of time once they've started? Do you know why?
The Dogmother
A coupl eof mine are like that - both pure breeds - one's small and delicate - far too posh to push and the other has wonky egg-laying tackle. No seriously, both had resp infections that affected their ability to lay eggs.

Just old age, she is 3 years old and a Hybrid that has layed an egg every day for 2 years so I suppose she deserves a rest.............
