Teething problems

Me :D

In my wise old age ;) I'm getting wisdom teeth

My bottom left molars were hurting 2 weeks ago (on Weds) and I didn't think anything of it. Was still the same on the Saturday when my brother was here and I realised I have half a wisdom tooth through on my top right!

That one didn't hurt and I didn't notice it, but its still the same, only a bit out.

Nothing coming through bottom left yet.

Will go to the dentist over Easter (need 6 monthly check anyway) but just wondering how long they generally take to come though, please, oh wise Omleteers?

They can take no time at all .... or ages... depending on whether they are impacting (growing along into the other molars). Generally if there's enough room the dentist will usually leave them to come through of their own accord. Mine were impacted and not enough room, so they took them out - I was about your age at the time.

Some people never get them at all.

I acquired two wisdom teeth in my 20s, neither of which ever came very far, if you know what I mean, they are just above the surface of the gum.

Then last Christmas (at the grand old age of 39) I got another one! That was SERIOUSLY painful for a few weeks but it settled quite quickly. My dentist coudn't believe it! I'm just hoping the fourth one doesn't intend to put in an appearance!!

If the pain gets really bad, the only thing I found that made any difference at all was oil of cloves which I kept on the gum permanently with a small piece of cotton wool. Tastes vile, but does wonders for the pain!! :vom:

Good luck!!

i had no problem with my teeth until about 3 years ago when my wisdom teeth started to come through

hopefully they have settled down now

one thing that I was told by the dentist is to try and keep it clean, and its really quite difficult. do you use and electric toothbrush? it might help if you get one and focus on it for a couple of seconds to clean it.

(((hugs))) there isnt much worse than Tooth ache (oh, and bonjella is good  )

cathy

Lewis, I think your mouth should be large enough to handle a few extra teeth

Thanks Christian! :notalk:

Doesn't hurt anymore, just thought it was wierd that there was nothing on the bottom where it hurts and the top ones only come through a bit and stopped for a couple weeks, least that sounds 'normal' then :)

I used to use an electric toothbrush but then stopped when I had braces, might find it when I'm at home :)

Thanks! :D

Definately look for the electric toothbrush IMO. My back wisdom teeth are still ony just above the gum and i've has several infections, but the dentist thinks it's more risky taking them out.

I appear to have SIX of them! One is still in the jawbone under another tooth and hopefully it's going to stay there!

Don't feel any wiser for the extra ones though!!!

Nature has, for some reason, decided to bless me with only one wisdom tooth :D My last x-ray from the dentist showed this. It's definitely important to make a special effort to keep it clean, mine had got a bit crusty :vom: as it didn't occur to me that my brush wasn't reaching far enough back with my normal brushing. 6 months later, after making a proper effort to keep it clean, my dentist told me she'd never seen such a clean wisdom tooth! :D:lol: By the way, I don't use an electric toothbrush, I just don't get on with them. My dentist told me that manual brushing is just as effective as an electric brush, as long as you have a good brushing technique - she showed me this. If you don't want to use an electric toothbrush, just ask your dentist to show you proper manual brushing technique.
