Christian
Tell me about it Cathy. I work 62 miles from home and it is costing me a fortune! I have looked into getting a coach, but would have to change a couple of times and that is mega expensive too! I would love to walk to work (could get a couple of dogs then) but not possible at the moment. All the best with it!
CatieB
Well done Cathy and good luck.. I am green with envy. Unless I worked in a field there is no walking for me. Whilst I adore living in the middle of a field (yes- in a house) it does mean that there is no walking and that my 4x4 is an essential bit of kit. I work in the centre of Cambridge and often feel like I should write in the mud of my car "genuinely required 4 wheel drive" It cost DH nearly £100 to fill the car the other day...ouch
Ms Marple
I have just signed up to the bike to work scheme and ordered my bike and kit so there is no going back now!! It is a 12 mile journey each way, so it will kill me at first, although I plan to do it in stages probably twice or three times a week. I can catch the train too so my plan is to use a combo of both until I am truly fit. I always promised that as soon as YS finished school I would do it. Well his last day was a week ago and his IB exams run from May 3rd to 19th, so the next week I will be off and raring to go. Only downside is that I live at the top of a hill Keep your fingers crossed for me!
jlo
I have started to cycle into work. It is about 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 miles depending on the route that I take (the longer one avoids a big hill on the way home!) I only work for two and a half days so it's not really a big deal and it takes me about half an hour. The fact that I bought a decent bike has made a huge difference as it used to be really hard work on my old one. I think that the bike will pay for itself quite soon as I have only had to fill up after a fortnight rather than a week since starting the cycle. I have been lucky so far with the weather - not sure if I will fancy it in the rain and I am not sure that I will be brave enough to do it in the dark once winter arrives. The walk will be another string to your training Cathy! Hope your cycle goes well Miss Marple - that is quite a distance!
Egluntyne
I'm lucky. I live less than a 10 minute walk from work.
Bramble
Fantastic! I used to walk to work - absolute bliss! Got a different house and different job now so no longer an option, but good luck to everyone with their alternative commuting, I'm very envious ! Ain't Nobody Here
I only live 2.5 miles (as the bike pedals!) from work and only work 3 days termtime so there really is no excuse . However, although it's almost all downhill in, it's almost all uphill back again which is what puts me off . If the car's sitting in the driveway (OH always cycles), it's very hard to make yourself take the bike .
Ms Marple
It's a difficult choice in some ways, especially as I got my lovely soft top sports car for my birthday last year. However I can't do the running easily due to knee problems and so I thought I need to make myself do something healthy and useful. Due to the fact that we live on a good route into Manchester trainwise, I have lots of options to reduce the journey length to start off with. I am hoping that I will not feel so guilty about the cost of filling up now and I can enjoy my car at the weekend. Fingers crossed. I went to a specialist bike shop and listened to the advice too - so I have a road bike rather than mountian bike.

The Dogmother
I'm lucky. I live less than a 10 minute walk from work. Me too, I walk through the park so it's a lovely walk as well. I enjoy being able to go home fro lunch and let the dogs out.
Plum
How's the biking going Terri? I work for NHS and need my car for visiting patients at home but they have moved the car parking 1/4 hr walk from the office. It's lovely in the morning walking in but it's driving me crazy they number of times I have to go in and out and the time I (waste) spend usefully burning off fat walking too and fro. Should be superfit if late and sweaty. Must see the bright side of it! Must see the bright side of it! Must see the bright side of it! Must see the bright side of it! Ms Marple
Always look on the bright side of life da da da da da..... I did my first cycle to work yesterday!!!! A friend and I got the train part of the way and then did the last three miles on our bikes there and back - very pleased with myself!! Went out today to explore how to lengthen the biking bit and shorten the train bit and managed to fall off on a very muddy part of the towpath I half- fell in the canal and could not stop laughing. ES came with me and was quite worried about my sanity. The shop persuaded me that a road bike would be better than a mountain bike- even though I said I would be using the towpath, so I am stuck with my lovely road bike so I guess I am going to have to be more careful on the towpath as I want to avoid the roads as much as possible. Second go to work is on Monday!! Need to get a plan as to how to get a week's worth of clothes in. I am thinking that I should drive in Mon and Fri and cycle the other three days, Any suggestions Omleteers?
Geoid
as I want to avoid the roads as much as possible. Why? The roads are perfectly safe, you just need to be careful. A road bike is better for your conditions than a mountain bike, but I would have gone for a hybrid (part mountain bike part road bike, although a bit late telling you now!) Need to get a plan as to how to get a week's worth of clothes in. I am thinking that I should drive in Mon and Fri and cycle the other three days, Any suggestions Omleteers? Can you not take your clothes in on a backpack or panniers? If not, then driving sounds like a good idea.
Chucky Mama
Ms Marple, could you change your road bike tyres for some that have more tread? Have a look at http://www.wiggle.co.uk They are pretty good for email advise if you are not sure. Or you could of course visit the person who sold you your bike. They would be able to advise and may fit some new tyres for you.
