bizarre things I found in the garden today!

Recommended Posts

I have spent the morning trying to tackle our 'kitchen garden', which hasnt really been touched since I broke my ankle 18 months ago.

I was quite surprised by some of the finds:

- the dog's kong, which I thought had disappeared years ago

- 4 hair thingies of the type neither child has worn for about 5 years

- a pair of knickers - not recognised, but the dog is a known underwear thief

- 3 empty beer bottles, which I think I might have used to bait a slug trap with once upon a time

- a bright yellow frisbee with the words "Jesus loves you" which I have NEVER seen it in my life before!

and most bizarrely - a single quail egg. Now, my quail are in pens a good 80 yards away from the kitchen garden, across a field, a lawn, a drive, down a path. how on EARTH did it get there?!

I can only think, as we had 2 escapees a few weeks ago, that one made it that far, and laid an egg there. but then I found 2 little piles of quail feathers only about a yard away from the chicken run, so either she went back home again or the cat got her and took her back - which seems unlikely :think:

 I find similar on my tidying up trips around the garden. I mostly find though mugs, cutlery and socks  The girls tend to go outside with their food & drink and then kick off their socks when they go on the trampoline  Plenty of hair bobbles too

Once I thought I'd found buried gold in our garden - it turned out to be melted down brass

Last weekend my neighbour dug up a large shrub and found the sleeve of a jersey buried underneath it...he didn't dare go down any further

We found lots of pots around ours yesterday when we were tidying up, some had been blown around in the wind but others were clustered in corners etc, I didn't realise that we had so many. WE have found lost paring knives a few times that have been thrown out with the compost and have reappeared many months later.

WE found a chewed chicken portion buried in our garden a month or so ago and an egg, we think that some animal must have raided a bin and hid them in the front garden. They had nothing to do with our chickens

This thread has made me laugh especially the knickers.

When I was digging out the end of the garden ready for getting chickens I found so many bits of the boys toys from years ago it was a real memory trip and I put them in the trees around the run. So they are now decorated with bits of lego and building beakers, space ship parts etc., 8)

The other day I cleared away a hebe that died in the frost this winter. An enormous insect was there head down in the earth. My heart was pounding as I poked at it and yes it was a big plastic fly- what a numpty.:lol:

I've not found any knickers out there yet

Should be bizarre things found in run - clothes pegs (line is next to run) a 20p piece, a dead mouse :vom: one of those paper cases from round a cup cake (union jack one) - thus have patriotic chucks  . Girls have unearthed flower pots and a chunk of glass (freaked out) thankfully no injuries.

No undies - but live in hope of finding my spare specs.

Time team for chickens sounds good - i would watch it.

As we live in a barn conversion, our garden is full of bailer twine and hop ties, also lots of bricks. Wherever the girls dig a dustbath I find have to keep pulling out the old bailer twine that they uncover as I worry they may try to eat it. Wondered why one of the trees we planted always looked so sickly. Finally dug it up to find a complete millstone under it. No wonder its roots were struggling! No knickers here yet.

We've found old forks, cobblers tools, chicken wire & most of all marbles in our garden. The old lady before us, used to put marbles in between her crazy paving to stop weeds.

We once had a bra hanging in our trees from the strong winds. It was a small one, so not one of mine. A posh one too. It's since blown into a tree over the road.

Next door's dog used to break into our garden and house and steal all sorts of stuff. He had the pond plants (twice), another time the neighbour came round with my knitting, which he found under a tree, and once I found teeth marks in my birthday choccies :x . DH strongly denied they were his teeth and said that he had seen the dog coming out of our house. Luckily the dog never touched my undies :)

We got home from our weekend away and I also noticed we have a yellow frisbee in our garden. i haven't checked the wording yet, but I am starting to wonder if they are being distributed by a religious fanatic

The other day when I was digging out an area to put woodchips on, I found an old washing-line stand (err... I don't know what to call it. That thing that you hammer into the ground to stand the washing line in) It must have been there at least 10 years.

Bits of pots! All the time! What the heck, did the last person to live here smash up and bury all of their pots or something!?

I also once found an egg. Dunno what bird it was from. It was on the floor, nestled in some long grass and weeds. It looked as if it had been abandoned, because there was no sign of a nest or anything. It was stone cold, and when we accidently broke it we found out that it had gone mouldy :vom: I wish I'd taken a photo of it now so that I could find out what type of bird laid it.

In my pond, nets. Loads of them! We used to have only a couple of nets and now we have about 6!

And I still haven't found my toy cheetah or tyranosaurus rex that I lost in the garden when I was little

Time Team for chickens?

:D

The excavations are still going strong but they keep taking a break to dust bath so it's taking a long time  .

My OH wants to fill it all in when the girls are moved round in a couple of weeks but they seem to have made the earth disappear so there is nothing to fill it in with - can't imagine where it's gone :eh: .

Mine have just started major digging works right under their Grub - and I haven't a clue where they have put their earth. And they haven't been out of the run today, so they can't have shaken it out of their knicker legs!!

I know for a fact there are at least 3 of those in roughly the same area of my garden, because I lose them every year and have to buy another one!! I always lose the little cap thingy, and then the hole in the ground just disappears. I've even tried a metal detector...

At my previous house it was a case of a new bathroom...which was really needed as the enamel was gone on the bath.....or get the concrete up in the garden so we could have a garden....it was just concrete and trees.

I chose the garden, along came a nice man Barney Rubble....don't laugh that was his name, he swore his dad had a bad sense of humour.

Under this four inch layer of concrete were metal garden gates, bed frames, carpets, mattress or two ,clothing....lots of rubble...... but no knickers.

We had tons of earth laid and seeds for a lush lawn which i watered religiously for weeks.

The bathroom did get done and guess what was under the bath ???? Yes a pair of old blue knickers the type with long legs ...bloomers, they were very dusty but in perfect condition , they had to go just the same.

Don't ask what was in the loft when we replaced the insulation....it was as bad as the garden..old carpets and rubbish.

Some jobs you just wish you hadn't started.

I bought a new house after that i'm still in it .....
