Has anyone ever cut a book up?

Recommended Posts

We had a charity book sale at work today, boxes of old books left over from previous fundraising events were piled onto tables and sold off. I picked a little 1980's book full of prints of Victorian watercolours of rural life, with the intention of cutting it up and mounting the pictures in charity shop frames (lots available round here for 50p), to give away as gifts.

There are 26 prints in the book and I paid 50p for it. I love more than half of the prints, and know friends will too. It isn't an old book, as I mentioned it is 1980's, and not rare at all. I plan to keep a few of the pictures for myself as they really remind me of my childhood, all the rolling fields and countryside.

I just feel a little uneasy about ripping it all apart!

I am a tutor of art and design and one of the projects I set is called http://Altered Books We normally find the books that have been thrown out of charity shops and are off to be made in to loo paper etc. Yes it does feel a little sad to defase books but the completed projcts are masters pieces in their own right. Some of the students are also reluctant to start with but once they get going the ideas flow. The books take on a new life. :D

Thanks for the comments, I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels a bit 'guilty' :D I'll post some pics when I get round to it, they are really lovely paintings :D

I know what you mean though, I still have a strong memory of being so angry with my mum as a child that I ripped a page out of one of my books (I immediately felt guilty and still do  ).

And so you should :shameonu: ! Very bad, ANH :lol:

Lewis, up late studying again?

We once had a leaking fishtank that ruined a few paperbacks, we couldn't bear to throw them away and when we got our woodburner we decided that it would not be a total waste if we used them as fuel. Oh! but how did that make us feels, so bad, burning books seemed to go against every moral principle that we both had :lol:

Your idea sounds much nicer and they will make lovely gifts. :D

I think it's lovely that you are thinking so hard before taking the scissors to a book!!! I would feel just the same, but as others have said, I think you are simply giving a new lease of life to pages that would otherwise end up in the shredder to be made into cardboard boxes. Go for it, your plan sounds lovely!!

My mum has lots of old Christmas decorations just like that apple! (obviously not apple shaped though, but same principle :D )

I've been to 11 different charity shops this afternoon and none had any decent picture frames, I'll have to keep an eye out now. I usually see loads of lovely frames but have never wanted to buy them
