Griffin Posted May 22, 2011 Share Posted May 22, 2011 Why, just a day before we go away on holiday, has my tumble dryer decided to break? Why today of all days? Why not last week or last month? Why on the day I need it most????? The electricity board are doing 'essential maintenance' so the electric is off tomorrow between 9am & 3pm, we leave late tomorrow night anyway so all our washing needed to be dry today. There's a load in the broken tumble dryer, a load of wet washing in the machine and two more loads waiting to go in! Everything gets tumble dried in this house, I never iron and don't even own an ironing board! So now I'm off to Swindon to buy an ironing board and some clothes pegs Woe is meeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Mr Griffin has promised to take me out to lunch to help me get over the shock of having to iron Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

They know these appliance they plot against us when we aren't looking My washing machine went the same day as my ageing dog had an accident on his bed... Coincidence... stoice Posted May 22, 2011 Share Posted May 22, 2011 My hair dryer stopped working as I was using it last weekend. Just 5mins before i needed to head out. They just know don't they? If you're careful when you peg out your washing, keep it even only peg along the seams so it leaves no dents, you'll find you may not need to iron! That's what I do. In fact, next to no ironing done in this house apart from a few smart items that need it. My OH irons his workshirts so they are 'done the right way' and that's it. This has put ideas into peoples heads They like perfectly ironed school shirts I haven't ironed since the birth of daughter number four five years ago and there is a real danger now that this kind of behaviour is going to be expected of me I took no pleasure in hanging washing outside (with my new pegs!), ironing is BORING and considering the rate this lot get through clean clothes I am now going to spend the rest of my life tied to the kitchen. I feel so tragic, cos I love putting all the clean washing on the line and putting it away afterwards - can definitely skip the ironing part though, luckily in our household we both can get away quite casual and un-ironed most of the time. I only bought an iron a few years ago as my girls were Sea Cadets & had to have crisp ironed seams on their uniform. I NEVER iron anything .... never,never ever. Fortunately it's been incredibly windy yesterday and today so things have got dry super quick. beach chick Posted May 23, 2011 Share Posted May 23, 2011 our tumblie-dry (as it is known) semi-broke about 6 months ago, and what with one thing and another I have not got round to getting it fixed. it tumbles, but doesnt heat. so with a combination of indoor airers (winter) and outdoor whirligig I have managed to use the tumblie-dry for 15 minutes per load - just to shake the creases out and soften it up a bit before folding and putting it away, as we are also a non-iron house - instead of the usual 60 mins plus. vv pleased with my enforced green-ness, but somehow it doesnt seem to be reflected in our electricity bills - now why could that be Mr. Electric Company?! I peg my stuff out on the line very carefully and then when I bring it in, I fold it as I take it off the line so it's all pressed and folded ready to put away. CatieB Posted May 23, 2011 Share Posted May 23, 2011 And do those appliances have the same shelf life or conspire together Our tumble drier was also dying in the sense that whilst it still dried our clothes everything was shrinking and it was SO loud it was difficult to stay in the same house when it was on. On the day we finally got another one delivered I walked in to find my dishwasher had leaked all over the floor. It too was unrepairable! MammaT Posted May 23, 2011 Share Posted May 23, 2011 I'm so happy with this thread... For years I've hidden the fact (from all but my nearest and dearest) that I'm an ironing phobe. In fact for years I didn't even own an ironing board. I bought one recently as it was a real bargain and I thought with summer coming I may need it!!! My children were shocked and I have to admit that it's only been used for my daughters art project that required the use of iron-on interface - thank goodness I found the iron, after turning the house upside down... My youngest has commented that the only times he's seen me ironing have been when we've been on holiday to our favourite (and very plush) hotel in Gloucestershire and everything's creased from the suitcases, or before a wedding... I find this enough of a disincentive for me not to iron, let alone anyone else. when the kids say things like "everyone else's mum irons their school clothes" my immediate response is "well learn to do it yourself"!! The Dogmother Posted May 23, 2011 Share Posted May 23, 2011 I used to hate tumble dryers until Rosie was small and the loads of washing increased dramatically. I can't stand washing hanging around the house and with a place so small there's nowhere to hide it. I love it to bits but use it wisely and try to dry outside when I can; this is limited slightly by the fact that I work full time, so can't rescue the washing if it's raining I love ironing, just find it hard to get the time to fit it in. chickencam Posted May 25, 2011 Share Posted May 25, 2011 Phew I have just read this thread and for a nasty moment thought that I was the only sad person who liked ironing and took great pleasure in smooth clothes and crisp bedding. I thought that I had found the reason why I seem to have so little time,maybe I was the only person who still ironed things I love to catch up with programmes on iplayer etc and have a pile of neatly folded clothes to show for it at the end. I agree that appliances do tend to give up on you just when you need them most. I would hate to have to live without my washing machine, best modern invention ever. I have a small tumble dryer but only use it for towels and a few other things in the winter, otherwise things go outside or in front of the woodburner overnight in the winter.
