witzend
As my chooks are a bit younger than I originally thought, and I've prepared for older ones..........is normal grit ok for baby bantams 8-10wks or should I have something smaller ie crush it down a bit or get budgie grit? Jools
Don't panic, it won't matter if they don't have any for a while. Could you ask the breeder if you could buy some from them?
Egluntyne
Try google for a supplier of chick grit.
witzend
I'll certainly ask the breeder - googled but delivery charges are a pain. See some people using budgie grit - will this do? Is it basically anything without shell?
Jools
I've used budgie grit from a local pet shop before but I'm sure the breeder will be able to help you
Space Chick
There are some great suppliers on eBay. Chicks do need proper chick grit ideally, although budgie does work very short term.
Chicken Kitty
What age should you move them onto 'normal' grit?

Chicken Kitty
I tried to name ours in advance but changed my mind during their first day with us as their little personalities came out and other names seemed to suit them better!
Luvachicken
Oh dear, I need a holiday......I just read the topic and thought it said "Gift for baby bantams"...... and I thought what sweet little gift it might be and if I might get my wyandotte bantams the same thing.............. pips_pekins
HAPPY CHICKS web site sells grit with oyster shell as ESSENTIAL for chicks 6wk+ Going off what you've all said - Is this harmful?? I got chick grit for my young bantams from Cotswold Chickens. Jude is really helpful and has given me lots of advice in the past. Delivery is very quick as well and I tend to add a few different things to the order to make it more cost effective
Egluntyne
You can get it via ebay in smallish quantities.
pips_pekins
After all of that, I have just topped up the grit pots and had a good look at the chick grit. It does seem to have shell in it I rang sooo many people and searched the internet to find the right stuff and it seems that even this chick grit has shell. There is no ingredients list so I can't be 100% sure but it looks like shell to me. I have been giving it to my girls for about 4 weeks now. They are 16 and 10 weeks. Any advice? Thanks. Redwing
Shell is a no no in chick and grower grit. The stuff you are looking for is insoluble grit or Flint grit. Pip, I think you will have to trust that your stuff is ok if it was sold specifically for chicks I bought a small bag of chick grit ages ago and have hatched 200+ chicks this year and not made a dent in it so a 100g bag from eBay is more than enough Chicks need chick crumb for their first six weeks, if you don't introduce any treats and just keep them on the crumbs then no grit is neded When they are 8 wks pls they can have grower or bantam grit this is just smaller bits than the layers stuff and doesnt contain shell so you could just pick out the small bits and no shell from the adult stuff, they'll eat so little grit that it woulnt be too taxing. Again if you just feed growers pellets grit is not essential

Just checked ebay and this is what I have - the chick grit version:- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Natures-Grub-Mixed-Grit-Oyster-Shell-1-2ltr-Buckets-/280668950969?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Birds&var=&hash=item870c8077bc

pips_pekins
I have just realised that my link says mixed grit oyster shell in the title but when you click on the link it shows 4 different pots and the one I have is called simply Chick Flint Grit. I would be interested in knowing if anyone else has tried it and if it is ok. scarlettohara, thank you for your link. Mine looks very similar to that so am hoping it is ok. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Natures-Grub-Mixed-Grit-Oyster-Shell-1-2ltr-Buckets-/280668950969?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Birds&var=&hash=item870c8077bc
