The rain !

Recommended Posts

Hi all wellit has been raining for days here and my chucks dont seam to mind at all but im workied about them getting cold .

I have a mix of ladies and while some seam to stay dryish the silkies look like ive jet washed them , there are shetlets in the garden for them and also i have moved the eglu off the woodchip ( as this has turned nasty in the week and is more mud tham chip )

Do i keep them in to keep them dry ? i carnt let some out without the others or will they be ok getting so wet ?

Chickens don't often get cold, they are very warm creatures and therefore are more likely to overheat than get cold.

Mine love to be out in the rain except when it is exceptionally heavy; I often see them steam drying once they get back into the cube.

I have come to the conclusion if a chicken doesn't like the rain it won't be out in it

Two of my silkies don,t worry about the rain so get wet whereas the other three are more sensible and take shelter. It's never seem to have done them any harm although I have been known to dry them with a paper towel! It's surprising though as they look like drowned rats but it'd only really the top layer that's wet, underneath they are still dry.

Mine don't seem to worry about the rain when they FR but huddle up when in the run - I bought an eglu transparent cover for the run for the winter -ha ha- and when it was throwing it down the other day I got it out. they took a while to realise that they would be dry under it and there was quite a lot of noise from the rain but it kept the chippings underneath really dry and it provides plenty of light. Not cheap but worth it - I only hope it lasts.

Mine do like to fr all the time but they do like to dig in my butterfly patch as its sheltered :( its also next to all my fruit bushes , and tonight they have all decided they like blueburys and strarburys , mop picks them off the bush and the others run around the garden screaming with it in there beaks
