Riley has arthritis - even better news :-)

Recommended Posts

Barely any improvement this week so we've just taken him to the vets. She said it feels a bit better but unless they x-ray him they won't know if it's a break or something more sinister. I'm taking him in on Monday for the x-ray which could then be sent to a specialist for advice as to the next step.

It was very upsetting as it was the first time the options of surgery, amputation or not letting him go on were mentioned.

She did say that the arthritis was hereditary but by keeping him fit and a sensible weight, we have helped him have a much longer painfree life that he might otherwise have had. We sometimes worried that taking him up mountains and on hill runs, we'd been wearing him out - seems it's the opposite 8) .

Another photo of my gorgeous boy.

The xray will shed more light on what is going and and should make the next step a more informed one. Try not to worry too much. I am a strong believer in quality of life for pets and I am sure that Riley would not have missed any one of those trips up those mountains so try not to beat yourself up about that :)

Edited to add:

Lovely photo, he really is a gorgeous boy :D

We're back from the vets.

It's not looking good. She said she'd never seen such a bad x-ray. She can't rule out something more sinister either, as there appears to be bone "nibbled away". If he was younger, she would have recommended an immediate amputation.

The x-rays are going to a specialist and we should hear by Friday.

I can't bear this, he is such a happy dog even though he can't walk properly  .
