Alis girls
First croup of autumn in surgery today- some child sounding like a sea lion. YS sent home from school having puked at the teachers feet (not on them!) and she apparently said "OMG" - silly woman shes a mum so surely her child has vomited at some point. Was on bucket emptying duty this pm - poor baby sleeping now. Hate this time of year - next it will be flu epidemic./pandemic whatever - roll on summer
patsylabrador
Oh, I remember vomit kits. At home it was bucket, old worn towels, dustpan & brush, dettol & hairdryer. In the van (VW camper - in case you think we made the kids roll around in the back of a works van) two carrier bags, one with cleaning kit & old worn towels, the other with changes of clothing. The twins would upchuck together at meal times for no apparent reason & going out was always a gamble. I was always impressed at how fast the older two kids who were only 6&7 during the worst could see the signs, grab their plates and move away from the table. They're both quite athletic now! Griffin
I've got daughter number three, Emily, at home today. She is unlucky enough to catch every single bug for miles around I guess she can be described as sickly or being of a weak constitution. Any illness she does get seems to take forever to go and knocks her for six. This time it's a urine infection. She started being ill at the start of July before being eventually diagnosed with a urine infection, it took three courses of antibiotics before finding one that would kill the nasty ecoli infection she had, and then as soon as she finished the medicine it returned so she had another course. She's been fit and well for only three weeks and now the infection is back again. Her sample tested positive for puss cells this morning so she's on more antibiotics. I bet it's the same infection. Her attendance at school is appalling, around 82% last school year. She's not even managed a full week since going back after the holidays last week before needing a day off
patsylabrador
Poor thing Griffin. I've read that drinking cranberry juice on a regular basis can help against urinary infections, anti-oxidants or something. Always worth a try, have a look on internet anyway. It would be nice if it does help. I just looked it up and it does sound as though cranberry juice could be very helpful to combat your daughters infection. I couldn't do a link because I'm on my phone. Edited September 13, 2011 by Guest
Griffin
She drinks it almost daily. When she's got a urine infection she's constantly thirsty, even gets up in the night for a drink.
patsylabrador
Oh, that's disappointing. Must be a worry for you & miserable for her.

Alis girls
I know horrid isnt it - YS is on the mend looks washed out and is very down and headachey -prob dehydration. Griffin I would ask your Gp to send her for a renal scan see i theres a reason why shes getting urine infections so much. They though YS had a duplex kidney (like an extra bit or even an extra kidneY) when he was little - turned out he moved during scan !! Hope all your little uns are on the mend - it is horrid being stuck indoors with a hot pukey clingy little un - even if my little uns 10 - he wants his mom when hes ill - bless- get well soon
Looney
Wishing everyone better soon. I had a phone call from the pre-school today to say my three year old had a temperature, I went to pick him up and although he's well enough in himself so far, I can see him heading downhill...his nose was streaming by bedtime. My 8 month old has developed a sticky eye today so no doubt she's got something too. She is due to start nursery next month when I have to go back to work so she'll catch everything going. Gah! patsylabrador
I decided to take my kids out of school & teach them myself. The constant stream of sickness stopped almost overnight.

They though YS had a duplex kidney (like an extra bit or even an extra kidneY) when he was little - turned out he moved during scan !! She had that scan two weeks ago and got the all clear. She thoroughly enjoyed seeing her innards on the screen Blood tests have shown nothing either. The doctor we saw today, one I don't like, said maybe she should have a low dose preventative antibiotic for a while but I'd rather not, I want to find the cause not mask what's going on. BeckyBoo
I don't know how old she is but my eldest had repeated urine infections when she was about 4-6 ish and it turned out it was because she was "lazy" about going to the toilet. She would be so busy doing whatever it is 4-6 year old children were doing she couldn't be bothered to go, which made her bladder lazy and her urine built up and became, well, yukky I suppose. I had to make her a sticker chart and really encourage her to go to the loo ALL the time. She grew out of it eventually but it was a real worry then. Proper homemade lemon barley is supposed to be good for some urinary stuff I've just read, worth a go....anyway, hope all your littlies and not so littlies get well soon, my youngest has a croaky throat, the joys of "back to school"! Alis girls
Yes my son took a picture of his kidney to "show and tell" (or show and smell as I call it ) and his classmates were well impressed. Becky could be right - my son didnt wipe his willy after going thus trapping moisture a breeding ground for bugs (anyone eating - I forget I have a nurses stomach and can eat toast whilst disc these joys) - in girls might be well to check shes not got vaginal thrush from lots of antibiotics - bugs can track up urethra. A low dose might of antib's might be an answer or ask for ref to paed or kidney specialist. We have had repeated letters re eldest sons attendance - let them come and see him when hes off and ill - who would be in a working mums shoes. get well soon everyone
chickencam
My son had only been back for 24 hours when he complained of a sore throat, that came to nothing then ED came down with a full on cold over the weekend and DS went on a field trip to The Gower yesterday and came back with another sore throat that had developed into a nasty one by this am but he has gone to school because it is his GCSE year and mine always seem determined to struggle through. I wasn't at their age and I will have them at home whenever they need to be, i think it best to keep their bugs to themselves. I was a sickly child and have grown up with a strong immune system so every cloud has a silver lining. The joys of the new term
TheGirlsMum
Weve just been back to the doctors again, tonsilitus isn't shifting so got stronger antibiotics. She is really quiet poorly, she's dropping in and out of sleep, could sure do with some myself, oh well.
snowberry
I felt awful during the last school year at the amount of absences that my daughter took because of tonsollitus. Then at parents evening a teacher said it wasn't unusual in year 7's. All those different primary schools meeting up in big school for the first time I should have known it wasn't just a primary school thing! chickencam
My older 2 had a tough time with illness in yr 7 because their schools take pupils from a very large catchment, having said that YD was much better because she had already come into contact with a lot of the bugs through her older siblings. Best wishes to all those poorly people.
Alis girls
I got so incensed when we had the computer generated letter from secondary school re ES's absence i sent note back to his teacher - telling her I couldnt win - if I send him to school unwell they send him home - if I keep him off I get peanalised - she laughed and said to ES |"your mums funny - i can see why shes cross" I'm waiting for truant officer with my rolling pin - bring it on
Griffin
I spent most of today in A&E with Emily She was in so much pain when she woke up this morning I thought maybe it was apendicitis but it would seem it's still just the urine infection. Her sample from Tuesday was 'inconclusive' Her antibiotics run out tomorrow so I'm to collect more. I really don't think that's the answer
Alis girls
Funny Griffin I was gonna PM you to see how things were. sorry to hear shes been ill again - I think you should insist on referrral to paediatrician and get her properly assessed. Hope you get it sorted.
