patsylabrador
Tomorrow I'm leaving the safety of London and doing a short break camping & cycling along the Monsal trail between Buxton & Bakewell. I chose it because it didn't look too demanding. Anyone have any knowledge, tips, good places for lunch in Bakewell? We're camping so quite glad the weather forecast is so nice. Quite excited actually. Edited September 29, 2011 by Guest
Willow
You've picked a great time to go if the weather holds - no advice just hope you have a good time
Olly
Sorry, not been there for years so can't recommend anywhere - but it's beautiful up there. I love the Peaks, used to live much closer and go there a lot. Have a great time, hope this weather holds.
sadietoo
Can't add anything to this except to say the weather is meant to be lovely this week, and it sounds like the perfect break...I am very Enjoy!!
jlo
I am very jealous. I used to live in Litton - a tiny village quite close to Bakewell. We used to pass Monsal Head on the way there - it's great. The pub in Litton, The Red Lion, used to do great food but I haven't been there for years so don't know if it is as good now. Egluntyne may have some more up to date info....
yvonne
Lovely area, you must check out the proper Bakewell tarts. Hope you have fun.
Egluntyne
There are two lovely pubs at Monsal head...with fab views. I'd eat at either of those personally. I've only ever eaten at the exhibition centre in Bakewell itself. Cheap and Cheerful and certainly OK. It looks miles from the town centre, but there is a footpath which leads to it in no time. It' s quite nice to get fishnchips and sit along the river bank .... although you will be mobbed by ducks.

Seagazer
Oh lovely, hubby had a interview for a job in Bakewell years ago, sadly he didn't get it. Have a lovely time, hope the weather holds up for you.
pips_pekins
It's years since we've been to Bakewell so can't help I'm afraid. Just wanted to say have a great trip .
patsylabrador
Thank you everyone. Walked/cycled about 20 miles in the heat, I hurt especially my rear. My bike and knee kind of broke and "Ooops, word censored!"ody told me there were hills in the Peak District!!!! It's in the name I guess. We had a wonderful time, a lovely break, really soothing for the soul if not the bottom. Stayed on a working farm called Beechcroft Farm, which was getting a delivery of pigs when we got there. Boy, I had no idea how noisy & cross they get. Shower/toilet block were immaculate and both dogs and children were welcome. Definitely the kind of holiday I want to do more often, with a new bike. It wasn't enormously far, but its given me a goal with my exercises.
pips_pekins
Sounds like a really lovely trip, other than your bike, knee and bottom! Hope you will be sitting more comfortably soon
Daphne
I've only just caught up with this as I didn't know what the Monsal Trail (just typed Trial) is Very well done If you ever fancy doing an easier bike ride and don't mind travelling overseas, we've just ridden along the Mosel in Germany. Its 220km of cycle/walking route (we didn't do the whole thing) and there are literally wine villages (and cake) every couple of miles so you can B&B or camp. B&B rates are from 15 euros upwards (probably 20-25 euros on average) but the breakfasts are usually fantastic, as you know food becomes a serious preoccupation when on a bike! You could go up one side and back down the other, or just choose a bit, or go end to end and get a bus/train back - they are really really geared up for it. Its very scenic and 100% flat! The vineyards are on very steep slopes going down to the river and are fascinating. There are loads of older Germans out and about as well, on bikes or foot. Very safe, very friendly
patsylabrador
Daphne, thank you for that info. I love going to Germany and now I've tried some proper biking that sounds like a perfect trip to plan. Flat sounds good. It sounds brilliant.
