craftyhunnypie
We are now legally a small farm! We got our CRN & CPH number on Friday! Now to decide what animals to have first. Going to sit down with hubby at the weekend & plan some fencing, housing & paddocks. Emma.x
Redwing
Brilliant news! I was waiting for this to appear The world is your oyster now (just remember about the Zebedee stylings of the Pygmy goat!) My first recommendation is a nice dairy goat or three, Anglo Nubian or British Alpines are nice then sheep of course Think about pigs in the spring, the idea being that they arrive and leave without you having to keep them over winter Whatever you do keep your paperwork in order and all together! craftyhunnypie
Will be spot on with the paper work as both me & hubby are organised people! Have been looking at the Pygmy's. Wow they are little when young aren't they? I wondered if those builders metal fence panels would be any good for forming a bit of an enclosure for Pygmy's, being as they can easily clear & squeeze through stock proof fencing? You can even get normal sized doors for those panels too. Hmm. Pigs won't be coming until next year. No matter how tempting they are. A neighbour over the stream has got 3 pigs who are rather huge, so not sure if they will be going soon, but I've been told its best to get pigs in May. Plus they really will just have to be pig 1, 2 & 3 or else it would be hard to let them go. Oh heck! I don't want goats for milk - as neither of us can stand goats milk or goats cheese - blurgh! We do both like the Angora goats & I am a knitter. So it would be really good to be able to spin the Angora fibre into beautiful yarn or send away to have made into a soft fabric. It's my birthday soon, so you never know what might appear! Watch this space! Errrrm Redwing..is this how you get to a total of 206? He he. craftyhunnypie
Been looking at electric fencing today as an extra to go with the stock proof fencing for goats. Due to them being escapologists. There are goat breeders nearby...Dairy goats & Angora goats. Would love Angoras. Obviously doing our research first! Have found some decent duck houses as well, so don't think it will be long until ducks join our gang. Emma.x

Lewis
Congrats Look forward to hearing about all the plans ... and seeing it I might be able to get a few Cade lambs next year if I'm lambing again! No posh ones though, just Welsh Mules Just try + work it so you can rotate the land and have different animals on it + so they're easy to move, lots of gates if you need, to move them to a different paddock or into a shed for shearing/foot trimming/lambing ... could get very expensive though! Alpaca!
Lesley
Will be spot on with the paper work as both me & hubby are organised people! Emma.x Do be prepared for DEFRA and Animal Health to not play ball though! - we've had leters from them with a reference on but when we call back they have no record of us even existing and no record of their own letter........letters to the previous owner saying they were coming to inspect and of course the letter was forwarded to the previous owner and the first we knew was 2 inspectors on the doorstep!.........a letter requesting TB testing for our Dexters a year after they were consigned to the freezers because the British Cattle Society records aren't linked to DEFRA records...... .....today we tried to order replacement ear tags for our two Aberdeen Angus cows as they are off to the abattoir in a couple of weeks, the tag people are linked to DEFRA who have the final check before giving the go ahead.....we had a phone call from the tags people to say that according to DEFRA we are only listed as having sheep Luckily, all our records are organised and filed but it still took 3 phone calls to sort out. We were looking at the Golden Guernseys they have at one of the Shakespeare properties last week......... All the very best with your new venture

craftyhunnypie
Having some ground work done on one of the fields at the mo. It's the field I have planned for Alpaca! Chooks are all very very happy here - egg yolks are beautiful colours & Mr. Boon (cochin cockerel) is fitter than ever - even though he is huge! I have 4 chicks hatched here, now 5 weeks old. My wheelbarrow got a flat tyre today when pushing it full of recycling bags & bin bags over the stream & to the end of our track. Lucky they didn't all fall in the stream, as was wiggling all over the place. I just laughed my head off. SO many things tickle me here - I find this way of life really comical. But love it!!!! craftyhunnypie
The Lampeter tree services are coming to cut some of our trees down round the electric cables overhead...free of charge!!! Best bit is, we can keep the logs too! Woohoo! Proper Yule logs that will smell divine of Pine. Emma.x
craftyhunnypie
I have just waded through a foot of water. The stream is flowing over our little bridge instead of under & the very bottom of the track has collected water... Good job I had extra long wellies on. Such are the joys of The Good Life. I just laugh & get on with it. Got some bits from the village shop & came back the long way round over neighbouring fields. Emma.x

craftyhunnypie
Stream over bridge again - track a lake again! Need some waders! Will have a walk up to the lead mine to see the other streams, they were like The Grand Canyon last time - quite stunning! Oil tanker came this morning to deliver 1000 litres of oil. We requested they come in the baby tanker - but the huuuuuuge one turned up, like you'd have at a petrol station! No way could it get over the little bridge, so it's re scheduled to come again in baby tanker next Wednesday. I always laugh at the challenges & mishaps of The Smallholder! craftyhunnypie
I'd be out buying all sorts, if only hubby would let me!!! Feel like this at the mo!!! I'm very into growing stuff, but he reckons I can't have my polytunnel until October & really I'd like it for Spring! With no greenhouse here, I don't know how I fulfill one of my biggest hobby's. I can't have a flimsy temporary greenhouse here, as when the wind blows - it truly blows. So it wouldn't last 5 mins. I do have a big veg patch area - used to be a sheep holding pen. But need a greenhouse for starting seeds off & potting on etc. Can only fit so much on a window sill. SO if anyone has any bright ideas, I'd welcome them! Got plans for a very large patch of sunflowers in one of the fields. Yay happy flowers! Emma.x
