Has anyone had a Deviated Septum repaired?Updated again

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, it appears I have a Deviated Septum (a bent bit of cartlidge in the nose) and I have to decide if I want to have it fixed. At the moment one side of my nose is almost completely blocked as a result.

The consultant tells me it is a straight forward procedure, but before I make a decision I wondered if any Omleteers had had this done and what their experiences were.

I should add I have virtually no sense of smell either ( very handy at times.........can't smell the poo trays or boiling vinegar for pickling!)

I had jaw surgery in 2004 and as a result it somehow deviated my septum. The Max Fax consultant agreed that I had a wonky nose and he put it right for me a few months later. I was in overnight - it is a quick and simple op. Slightly swollen afterwards but no black eyes. Sore but not overly painful but I did have the complication of a severe nosebleed a week later and was readmitted overnight. Oddly enough I had a similar nosebleed episode a week after the jaw surgery too so I think it just happened to be a particularly sensitive nostril. It was sorted and has never reoccurred.

My daughter has breathing problems on one side and may end up with a septoplasty - they wanted her to wait until she was 18 to ensure she was fully grown.

Just seen this as I was searching for something else. I'd be very interested in how you get on. YS has a very bad deviated septum. Originally the consultant said he'd have to wait until he finishes growing but then changed his mind and said a lot of his surgeon buddies had started doing them earlier.

We want YS to have it done but he doesn't seem keen. He had an operation to take away some of the tissue inside his nose to free up a bit of breathing space a couple of years ago. He felt a bit poorly afterwards and had a whopping headache, I think this has put him off.

His goes over to the left and then bends right over and touches the right so that he can't breathe out of that side. He also has terrible hayfever and doesn't have much of a sense of smell (handy in some ways  ). I think he would find life so much easier if he had it done but are worried about the fact he's only 13. I also think that its becoming more noticeable as his face is changing and worry that other people will start noticing it and taking the mickey out of him.

Mrs Webmuppet did your friend's son have to wait until he was 17 or did it just happen at that age? I wouldn't want to put him through an operation now if he would need to have it done again later. Hmmm I think perhaps we might need to see the consultant again to see if anything has changed in the last couple of years.

Both my partner and my mother have had it done. A couple of days of tenderness and a bit of a headache was all either of them complained about. And it made a huge difference to my partner's snoring which was disturbing me to the point of having to sleep on a different floor in the house, not just a different room  He doesn't get the same awful sinus infections after colds and during hayfever season either now, which is obviously a huge benefit and the reason it was done in the first place.

My OH had this and also had pollops. He could not breath through his nose since he was a young man. He had the operation and in his words :silenced: hurt. He looked like Groucho Marx with a big pad under his nose. He wished at the time he had not bothered and it took several weeks before he noticed any improvement. He is now pleased he went through with it and breaths through his nose and can smell again. He feels much more comfatable. :D

I had this procedure (sub mucous resection, I think they called it) done many years ago, also at the local Nuffield. I'm pretty sure that my nose was wonky as a result of going down a slide head first as a child.

I didn't experience any pain, just discomfort. The worst thing was having wadding stuffed up my nose during the first night which stopped me from sleeping. Also, the bleeding went into my stomach and made me vomit (difficult when your nose is blocked and most annoying when I'd ordered a lovely big breakfast after fasting most of the day of the op). I went home after a couple of nights and just had to keep steaming over a bowl of hot water every so often for a few days.

It was lovely to be able to breathe properly through both nostrils, though I'd not really considered it a problem before as I was so used to one nostril being blocked. I can't say it made a lot of difference to my snoring though - I still snore like a sinussy wart hog! Perhaps I would be worse if I hadn't had the op...

Now, about 20 years later, I still get the odd nosebleed, but nothing horrendous. It is definitely worth it to be able to breathe freely though.

I have just found out that the PCT will not fund a septorhinoplasty for my son even though he cannot breathe through one nostril and his nose is very wonky.

Has any one else had problems getting this done on NHS / does any one know how much it might cost to have it done privately?

Many thanks

I have been treated by the local Nuffield hospital ( via a health plan through work) I'm not sure how much the op would be but a visit to the consultant was around £160, the fibrascope thingy up the nose test came out at about £300, a CT scan was £740  . You could try ringing a Nuffield Hospital and see if they could give you a rough idea of fees.
