Mr Rhode Island Red
I thought I'd do some research on the forum and its members... Note all of the following information is taken from the "members" section of the forum As of now (12.09 PM on the 3 November 2011) the forum has a total of 11,541 members. The first member, james, joined on Sunday September 26th 2004 at 4:49 PM According to my calculations, the forum has been on the go for 2,595 days (approximately 7 years and 1 month) Therefore-11,541÷2,595=4.447- an average of 4.447 (lets say 5) members join the forum every day. Of these 11,541 members: 9,989 have made less than 20 posts, which comes as quite a surprise to me, considering how many posts are on this forum 1,803 have made more than 20 posts 799 users, including myself, have made more than 100 posts 171 users have made more than 1,000 posts And 16 users should be proud of themselves to have made over 10,000 posts Well done to all, Mr Rhode Island Red **edited to count Sam's latest achievement of 1,000 posts ** Edited November 3, 2011 by Guest
majorbloodnock
Well, of course James is part of the Omlet team, so his joining date will be the date the forum was initially set up. As for the rest, it's the law of diminishing returns isnt' it. around 10,000 members at about 20 posts each and around 20 members with about 10,000 posts each. In fairness, though, the top 20 members probably have those stats as a result of moderating duties rather than simply posting for the sake of it.... I'd be interested to see how the joining stats have changed over time - whether it's linear or has snowballed - and whether there are any particular spikes or troughs. 11,500 members seems a lot for what is effectively quite a niche pastime, so it'd be good to understand it better. P.S. your stats add up to more than the total, so I'm guessing you've got some overlapping categories here and there....
Mr Rhode Island Red
As a matter of fact, only 5 of the top 16 are moderators, the other 11 must be pretty dedicated members

The Dogmother
As a matter of fact, only 5 of the top 16 are moderators, the other 11 must be pretty dedicated members Several who're not mods now have been mods in the past. Me for instance I'll also add that quite a lot of folks register and never post at all. At one stage we went through the members list and pruned some of the really old non-posters, but that was about 2 or 3 years ago that we did that. I'd be interested to know how many non-posters there are now.
Ain't Nobody Here
Add to that the number of spammers who get zapped and removed and it would probably double .

That's true, but then they are only on the list for a matter of minutes before they're hunted down

Snowy
Some of us gained over over 10,000 posts before we even became mods I don't have time to post as much these days Membership has definitely increased exponentially more over the last few years - we saw a huge hike following Hugh FWs Chicken Out campaign for instance. After further research I have found that a total of 5,596 members (yes, that's about half of the total members) have made absolutely no posts whatsoever I understand that a small fraction of that number may have just joined but as for the rest... Time for a bit of early spring cleaning for the Forum?

Time for a bit of early spring cleaning for the Forum? I'm going to show myself up as the sad techie I am by mentioning Warnock's Dilemma. Summarised, not posting to a forum may be for several valid reasons that have nothing to do with lack of interest. As a result, many of those five and a half thousand people may have become members for reasons other than posting on the forum - although I don't know what else Omlet club membership allows someone to do. Not to say a spring clean isn't well recommended, but just a bit of wibbly wobbly web trivia.
The Dogmother
Mods can also see when person last visited the forum, so they wouldn't delete the account of anyone who, for instance, joined to browse but not post.

Chortle Chook
As a 1000+ forum obsessive I'm fascinated by this for some reason. Can we nominate Mr Rhode Island Red as the site statistician? counturchickens
As a relative newbie I often keep my thoughts to myself, as worry about giving the wrong advice! I Do browse and pick up all sorts of tips, and have a good giggle. When a new hen keeper I dabbled with other forums, but this is the most friendly and helpful!
